{"id":122079,"date":"2014-08-11T21:52:53","date_gmt":"2014-08-12T01:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=122079"},"modified":"2014-08-11T21:52:53","modified_gmt":"2014-08-12T01:52:53","slug":"business-life-personal-branding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/columns\/business-life-personal-branding\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSINESS &#038; LIFE: Personal Branding"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_83298\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83298\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-83298\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Valda Henry\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry.jpg 160w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/valda-henry-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Valda Henry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I thank Father Cuffy, \u201cDominican in England\u201d as well as those who emailed or contacted me by phone or in person for their love, support and encouragement, following last week\u2019s article.\u00a0 I missed and love you too, and that\u2019s why I returned as soon as my \u201cbones\u201d said it was okay!<\/p>\n<p>This week, we explore the concept of Personal Branding.\u00a0 About five years ago, a friend said to me that I had taken branding to a whole new level with what I was doing with VF Inc and he was impressed with the consistency of the message, and I could include branding on my training schedule as I could teach businesses a thing or two about branding.\u00a0 Interestingly at the time, I was not thinking about branding.\u00a0 I was ensuring the consistency in what we do with our Core Values, Vision and Mission.\u00a0 After he said this I did some reflection and confirmed that being true to the core values, vision and mission of the organisation is branding, and consistency in the message of the brand is so critical for authenticity and credibility.\u00a0 \u00a0The same can be said about personal branding, though this is not something many people give thought to and prior to this summer, not a term I used, though a concept, I speak about often and I live.<\/p>\n<p>In preparing for the session on \u201cWho Am I?\u201d I came across a book, \u201cMarketing Brand You\u00ae,\u201d by LaFern Batie, and this book brought home the concept of personal branding.\u00a0 This led me to rename the session, \u201cWho Am I?\u00a0 My Personal Brand.\u201d\u00a0 LaFern quotes the Peter Montoya definition of personal branding, \u201cA personal brand is an identity that stimulates precise, meaningful perceptions in its audience about the values and qualities that a person stands for.\u201d\u00a0 In essence your personal brand is your answer to the question, \u201cWho Am I?\u201d\u00a0 And it is important that your answer to the question is the same answer you would get when you, like Jesus, ask others, \u201cWho do others say I am?\u201d and \u201cWho do you say I am?\u201d\u00a0 When the answers are the same, it means that people know you but importantly it means you have consistently portrayed the same message.\u00a0 You are being true to you and living an authentic life.\u00a0 In other words, you are \u201creal!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If we go back to the Biblical text, we heard answers to the first question being, \u201cSome say, John the Baptist, Some Say Elijah, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets (Mathew 16:13-20).\u201d\u00a0 And Jesus challenged his disciples by asking them directly, \u201cAnd <strong>you<\/strong>, who do <strong>you <\/strong>say I am? Peter answered, \u201cYou are the Messiah, Son of the Living God.\u201d\u00a0 What do the answers to the questions reveal?<\/p>\n<p>This year, at the Youth Series, \u201cPersonal Branding,\u201d was used almost as a sub-theme.\u00a0 The young people are very brand conscious.\u00a0 They know of all the major brands and they desire them.\u00a0 Some seem to almost tie their identity with the brands they wear, and the message to them was to develop their own personal brand, as they are not the things they wear or own.\u00a0 They were asked several questions including \u201cWho are you? What is your brand? What does your brand represent? What do you want to be known for?\u00a0 Is that message consistent in all areas of your life?\u201d\u00a0 They were also given exercises including using the letters in their name to choose adjectives that describe who they are and want to be and to draw a symbol that best represents who they are.\u00a0\u00a0 The message to them was clear, \u201cWhen you know who you are, what you represent and what you stand for, it is easy to reject the things that do not add value to your brand.\u00a0 It is easy to make the right choices for your life.\u201d\u00a0 The same can be applied to business.<\/p>\n<p>At the Youth Series, we got opportunities to put \u201cPersonal Branding,\u201d to the test and learnt some valuable lessons.\u00a0 In one instance a nametag, \u201cCentre of Attention,\u201d was given to a \u201cYouth Serieser\u201d and she was upset.\u00a0 While the person who gave her the nametag was reprimanded, the opportunity was used as a teaching moment for her individually and the class the next day.\u00a0 Some of the questions asked included, \u201cHow do you feel? What makes you upset to be branded as the \u2018centre of attention?\u2019 What do you think made the ones who wrote the tag brand you as \u2018centre of Attention?\u2019 What did you do or do you do that sent that message? How would you like to be seen?\u00a0 Are your words, actions, attitude and deportment consistent with how you would like to be seen?\u00a0 Are they consistent to your brand? Do you think it is time to rebrand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another instance, one boy ridiculed another and two girls joined in.\u00a0 This was also used as a teaching moment.\u00a0 In that instance, we spoke not just about personal branding; we spoke also about accepting diversity, peer pressure, judgement; decision making and responsibility, kindness, tolerance, choosing friends wisely and walking and living one\u2019s purpose.\u00a0\u00a0 We also spoke about the need to rebrand to ensure the consistency and authenticity of our brand.<\/p>\n<p>All of this comes back to the central question, \u201cWho am I?\u201d\u00a0 And when we know who we are, it is like a beacon and light house in the dark guiding us to safety;
