{"id":129723,"date":"2014-12-22T11:03:12","date_gmt":"2014-12-22T15:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=129723"},"modified":"2014-12-22T11:50:26","modified_gmt":"2014-12-22T15:50:26","slug":"uwp-to-challenge-general-election-results-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/politics\/uwp-to-challenge-general-election-results-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"UWP to challenge general election results in court"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_125259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125259\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-125259\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/linton1-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"Linton said the result of the election will be challenged in court \" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/linton1-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/linton1.jpg 361w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linton said the result of the election will be challenged in court<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, has assured Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit that court action will be taken regarding the many alleged breaches of the law in relation to the 2014 General Election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUWP will definitely move to the court,\u201d said Linton.<\/p>\n<p>According to Linton, the party is still determining whether it will move in the traditional way of an election petition or whether it will go another route.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to what he described as Skerrit\u2019s narrow escape on technicalities, from conviction on a matter of his disqualification to contest the 2009 General Elections, Linton remarked that in court, it is not so much what one knows but what can be proven.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The party has sufficient evidence on some grounds to approach the court in a certain way,&#8221; Linton added.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that there were many breaches of the law in relation to the 2014 General Election, Linton said the UWP will legally challenge violations that the party has specific evidence of.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the UWP will address clear breaches of the rules of engagement, breaches of the statutes and actions that constitute clear criminal behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The UWP has accused the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) of bribing and treating overseas based and resident Dominicans as part of their campaign to the win the General Election.<\/p>\n<p>Many overseas based Dominicans were given free tickets in addition to spending money to come to Dominica to vote in favour of the DLP, according to the UWP.<\/p>\n<p>A number of these persons did not qualify to vote because of the residence requirements according to the Electoral Laws of Dominica, the party said.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the UWP has accused the DLP of spending nearly $30-million on its election campaign, &#8220;acquired from mysterious sources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dominicans were treated to free concerts by foreign artistes who were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to perform as part of the DLP\u2019s campaign events,&#8221; the UWP said.<\/p>\n<p>The party said it has been advocating for electoral reform for a number of years to remove the possibility of elections manipulation.
