Minister for Community Development Gloria Shillingford is in support of cabinet\u2019s decision to withhold the supply of cement, tarish and steel from National Day of Community Service projects for the next three years.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the prime minister announced that these materials would not be issued for construction projects as a result of a decision taken by cabinet. Instead, for the next three years National Community Day of Service will be used for beautification and environmental enhancement projects.<\/p>\n

Shillingford, who addressed the official media launch of Dominica\u2019s Independence celebrations, said that the decision came at the opportune time as there has been a visible increase in litter around the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe this change in focus is timely. Over the last few months the amount of garbage seen around the country has become a matter for concern. It is of vital importance that Dominica\u2019s image of being clean and green be maintained if we are to continue to market our country as the Nature Island of the Caribbean. We all have individually or as community the ability to play a part in maintaining the natural beauty of our country and the first step towards achieving this goal is keeping it clean,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

The minister said that she is looking forward to viewing the creative beautification projects that will be executed around the country. She took the opportunity to inform that most village councils on the island had already been aware of cabinet\u2019s decision before it was announced as she had had some previous dialogue with them on that issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure no one here can say that we do not need to concentrate on this. And long before the announcement was made by the prime minister I had already said to many of the village councils because I\u2019ve been on a drive to visit every village council and every town council in Dominica and each of them that I went to I\u2019d already said to them let our concentration be on cleaning up of Dominica. So a number of them knew that. Some of them just did not hear it before,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

Shillingford is convinced that these clean up campaigns are a sure way of empowering communities. She assured that the decision was not intended to last forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not say that we are going to stop it forever. What we are saying that sometime during the year, if you want to do some road that is very urgent and we have the money, we will give you the money and you will be able to do that.
