{"id":178,"date":"2009-12-21T11:21:04","date_gmt":"2009-12-21T17:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/?p=178"},"modified":"2009-12-21T12:46:08","modified_gmt":"2009-12-21T18:46:08","slug":"bath-estate-man-fined-for-hitting-shop-owner-with-a-coconut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/crime-court-law\/bath-estate-man-fined-for-hitting-shop-owner-with-a-coconut\/","title":{"rendered":"Bath Estate man fined for hitting shop owner with a coconut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Bath Estate man has been fined by the court after hitting a shop owner with a coconut (jelly) and resisting arrest.<\/p>\n<p>19-year-old Wayne Maxwell appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste Monday morning and pleaded guilty to the charges of battery and resisting arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Maxwell told police officers yesterday that he reacted in that manner after the complainant Rudolph Baron, refused to sell him a top-up and a \u201cfive bag\u201d (a bag containing five dollars worth of cannabis).<\/p>\n<p>According to the facts of the case which were presented by the police prosecutor, at about noon yesterday, the defendant came to the complainant\u2019s shop and started making demands. The complainant did not comply and the defendant took a jelly and threw it towards the defendant\u2019s shop. It struck the complainant on his forehead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Young_Green_Coconut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179 alignleft\" title=\"Young_Green_Coconut\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Young_Green_Coconut.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Young_Green_Coconut.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Young_Green_Coconut-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a>Woman Police Constable M Gustave and Constable E Matthew responded to a report by the complainant and went to investigate. Maxwell began running when he saw the officers and Constable Matthew gave chase. He was later subdued.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned by the police the defendant said, \u201cI did not hit Mister. I go in the shop and ask for top-up. He say he did not have any top-up&#8230;.I go and tell him I want a five bag&#8230; He spit on me&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In mitigation, Maxwell said that he was working and was planning to have a baby. The magistrate responded by advising the defendant to concentrate on improving his skills and education and not having children. She also said, \u201cI have to advise you, 19 is not too young for you to understand that you need to behave wisely&#8230;.and with that behaviour you still want to have a baby? You have to learn to be responsible&#8230; You can\u2019t be here passing five bags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maxwell, who was a first time offender, was sentenced to pay the fine of $300<\/p>\n<p>by March 31, 2010 or face one month in prison for resisting arrest.
