Many seek comfort in the famous verse, \u2018For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.\u2019(John 3:16) Some say that the Son of God is second in the \u2018divine trinity.\u2019 Others state that God used Mary to bring forth his Son to die for the sins of the world. Also, one has to believe that Jesus is the Son of God or he is an anti-Christ.<\/p>\n
Many beliefs are held regarding the sonship of Jesus Christ peace be onto him. When we say that Jesus is the Son of God, is this literal or metaphorical? What does the term \u2018son of God\u2019 mean? The Bible, the Holy Quran, logic and common sense dictates that Jesus peace be on him is not literally the son of God but a servant and prophet of God.<\/p>\n
The Old Testament proves that son of God is not exclusive to Jesus. \u2018Behold, a son (ben \u05d1\u05b5\u059e\u05df) shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.\u2019(I Chronicles 22:9-10) Solomon is seen as a son of God according to the verses. Secondly, David is the begotten son of God, \u2018Psalms 2:7 we find “I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son (ben \u05d1\u05b5\u059e\u05df); this day have I begotten thee.\u2019(Psalms 2:7) If David is begotten by God, why is it said that Jesus is the only begotten son of God? Also, Israel is a son of God, \u2018And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son (ben \u05d1\u05b5\u059e\u05df), even my firstborn.\u2019(Exodus 4:22) These verses in the Old Testament proves that Jesus is not exclusively the son of God.<\/p>\n
The New Testament shows that Jesus is not the only son of God. “Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.”(Luke 3:38) This verse shows that Adam peace be onto him was the son of God. Additionally, peacemakers are sons of God, \u2018Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God.\u2019(Matthew 5:9) Let us site other examples, \u2018Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation\u2014but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”<\/p>\n
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs\u2014heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.(Romans 8:12-17) Those who are led by the spirit of God are sons of God; does that make one a literal son of God or is this figurative language? Are we heirs of God meaning that God will die someday then we may have dominion over his kingdom? Is Son of God exclusive to Jesus? All these questions and verses proves non-exclusivity of the \u2018sonship\u2019 of Jesus Christ (p). Lastly, \u2018I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people; and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one, and, it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.'(Romans 9:25-26) Thus New Testament verses prove that God does not have an offspring.<\/p>\n
Logic, dictates and common sense attest that Jesus is not the literal son of God. Let us examine the famous verse then discuss it God\u2019s willing, \u2018For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.\u2019(John 3:16) Many Christians boast that the original scriptures of the New Testament is Greek. For the sake of discourse, let\u2019s explore the main root words in Greek. In Greek the term \u2018huios\u2019 (\u03c5\u1f31\u1f78\u03bd) means according to the Greek Lexicon: a son (sometimes of animals), used very widely of immediate, remote or figuratively, kinship — child, foal, son. If you believe that God literally has a son then your interpretation would be God has a son (sometimes of animals) or a child or an offspring of God. Also, the word begotten in Greek is monogenes (\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03bf\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd\u03b7) which means:\u00a0 only-born, i.e. sole — only (begotten, child).<\/p>\n
If one believes that Jesus is the begotten literal son of God then, what does begotten means? To begot means to be the biological father of, or to cause to come into existence.(yourdictionary.com) If one says that God is the biological father of Jesus and Mary is the biological mother of Jesus, is this implying that God and Mary had biological relations to bring forth Jesus out of wedlock? If you mean the latter definition that he caused Jesus to come into existence then know that God caused all things to come into existence. Therefore, logic and common sense dictates that Jesus is not the literal son of God.<\/p>\n
The Bible proves that son of God means servant of God. In I Chronicles 22:9 Solomon is the son of God. The word in Hebrew is Ben (\u05d1\u05b5\u059e\u05df) which means: a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc.). If son of God means one with a family name then Solomon is literally the son of God like Jesus which amounts to blasphemy because to literally beget is an animal act. If it is figurative language then the best meaning here would be subject, so Solomon is God\u2019s servant or subject. Also, the attribution of peacemakers being the children of God is in a figurative sense which means a servant of God. Therefore, we have clarified that son of God means a servant of God.<\/p>\n
The Bible and Holy Quran proves that Jesus was a prophet or messenger of God.\u00a0 And the crowds said, \u2018This is the prophet (prophetes \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2) Jesus of Nazareth of Galilee.\u2019(Matthew 21:11) Moreover Jesus said, \u2018A prophet (prophetes \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u03b7\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2) is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.\u2019(Mark 6:4) These verses from the Bible clearly show that Jesus was a prophet of God and not the literal son of God. Additionally, Allah says, \u2018O people of the book (Jews and Christians)! Commit no excesses in religion; do not say anything about Allah except the truth. Jesus Christ the son of Mary was a Messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him; so believe in Allah and his messengers. Do not say \u201cTrinity\u201d desist; it will be better for you for Allah is One God, glory to Him above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth and enough is Allah as a disposer of affairs.\u2019(Chapter 4:171)<\/p>\n
The Holy Quran proves beyond a shadow of doubt that God has absolutely no offspring. Chapter Purity of Faith states that God has no son or offspring. \u2018He begets not, nor is He begotten.\u2019(Chapter 112:3) Those who say that God has a literal son echo similar sentiments of pagans of past generations. Allah addresses the pagans regarding this grave misconception, \u201cNow ask them their opinion, is it that your Lord has daughters and they have sons? Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses? Is it not that they say from their own invention, \u2018Allah has begotten children?\u2019 They are liars! Did He choose daughters rather than sons? What is the matter with you? How do you judge? Will you not receive admonition? Do you have a manifest authority? Bring your book if you are truthful.\u201d(Chapter 37:149-157) Many verses in the Holy Quran dispels the notion that Allah begets a son as well as challenges anyone to bring their scriptures for scrutiny as we have done today. Thus Allah\u2019s word is crystal clear for all to understand without any preconceived notions.<\/p>\n
In short, the Bible, the Holy Quran and dictates of reason proves even in their \u2018original\u2019 language that Jesus is not the literal or exclusively the son of God. Also, any verse or interpretation which contradicts what is proven above leaves one to question the validity and interpretation of the Bible.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, it is understood that we as a Dominican nation were taught these concepts which originated from Greco-Romanian paganism. As we journey into dispelling the myths about God with authentic proofs and evidences, articles will be presented about the accurate knowledge about God with deep spiritual insight and understanding. It will be clear for both polytheists, agnostics and atheists to recognise. The question is, what is the condition of your heart as you examine these proofs? Do you feel a tightness or contrition in your chest which causes an emotional response or are you relaxed and calm as proofs and evidences are presented so that Allah will guide you to the truth?
