Leanthia Pacquette-Lewis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Opposition Leader Hector John has said that the recent departure of a female candidate from the United Workers Party (UWP) should be seen as a sign that Dominica is in need of a “thriving democracy”.<\/p>\n

Leanthia Pacquette-Lewis, who contested the Grand Bay seat during the 2009 general elections but lost, recently announced that she was leaving the party and active politics to devote more time and focus on her family, business and studies. Pacquette-Lewis had told media that politics was affecting these areas of her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hear clearly, it is affecting her as a person to fend for herself and her family and that is a serious problem that we have, not only as a political party but as a country. People are afraid to be victimized. We\u2019re afraid to align with things or parties, or issues that are not in sync with the government and that\u2019s the reality of the day. It\u2019s a sad reality but we have to face it,\u201d John told Dominica News Online.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all wish Leanthia well in her future endeavours. I wish her all the best; we have nothing bad to say.
