{"id":206624,"date":"2018-10-22T15:42:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T19:42:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=206624"},"modified":"2018-10-23T10:12:02","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T14:12:02","slug":"environmental-health-department-calls-for-prioritization-of-food-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/health\/environmental-health-department-calls-for-prioritization-of-food-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Health Department calls for prioritization of food safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_206625\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-206625\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-206625\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/calme-642x577.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/calme-642x577.jpg 642w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/calme-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/calme-768x690.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/calme.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-206625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calma Louis is from the Environmental Health Department<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Environmental Health Department is calling on vendors to make food safety a priority for this year\u2019s 40th Anniversary of Independence celebrations, especially during major events such as World Creole Music Festival and Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l Wand\u00e9vou.<\/p>\n<p>The call came from Health Officer from the Environmental Health Department Calma Louis.<\/p>\n<p>She said during such events, the goal is to minimize the risk of food-borne diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout this event, our main goal will be to prevent or minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses and maximize safety of participants, spectators, visitors, event staff, volunteers and the population in general,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that the Environmental Health Department has a pivotal role in ensuring that all foods sold to the public are safe and sanitary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also be inspecting food stalls and some of them would be that of the Dominica Festivals Committee\u2019s as well,\u201d Louis stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be doing the artiste booth, the media booth\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louis mentioned also that the food vendors will be monitored from time-to-time and ask for cooperation from them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years we have had some hostility being given to the Environmental Health Officers when they are performing their duties,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe ask for your cooperation this year as we ensure that our visitors and our patrons who have here do not come down with any food-borne illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louis went on to say that food safety is everyone\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the responsibility of the patrons, it is the responsibility of the vendor and therefore the vendor has the most important role to play during the vending of food for the World Creole Music Festival,\u201d Louis indicated. \u201cWe want to ensure that our vendors comply with the requirements set by the Environmental Health Department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She advised vendors that they should ensure that they have hot holdings to provide safe foods or hot foods and adequate storage for frozen food and raw meat items whether they are seasoned. She said meats should be held in a cooler with ice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ice used to store drinks should not be used for serving drinks,\u201d Louis warned.<\/p>\n<p>She encouraged vendors to practice correct hand hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour hands are to be washed all the time,\u201d she advised. \u201cEmployees are properly attired, your white apron, no long fingernails, no polished nails\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louis mentioned also that employees must have valid food handlers permit displayed at all times and they should have a temporary food certificate issued by the Environmental Health Department for Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l Wand\u00e9vou.<\/p>\n<p>She revealed that over the years there has been an improvement in the organization of the event within the food stalls, therefore the Environmental Health Department applauds those who really contributed in making that happen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Environmental Health Department is calling on vendors to make food safety a priority for this year\u2019s 40th Anniversary of Independence celebrations, especially during major events such as World Creole Music Festival and Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l Wand\u00e9vou.
