{"id":232981,"date":"2019-08-11T17:57:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-11T21:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=232981"},"modified":"2019-08-11T17:57:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-11T21:57:19","slug":"inreased-chance-for-above-normal-2019-hurricane-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/inreased-chance-for-above-normal-2019-hurricane-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Inreased chance for above normal 2019 hurricane season"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_233001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233001\" style=\"width: 587px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-233001 \" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2019-08-11-at-5.06.25-PM-642x361.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-233001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marshall Alexander (front left) at the <em><strong>Communicating During Crisis &#8211; Introduction to Disaster Risk Management Workshop<\/strong><\/em> held for media and communicators<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acting senior meteorological officer, Marshal Alexander, has indicated that there is a 45% chance of an above normal hurricane season in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander made the disclosure at a training session held for members of the media and communications sector at the Office of Disaster Management in Jimmit on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Based on information from the latest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/media-release\/noaa-increases-chance-for-above-normal-hurricane-season\">(NOAA) prediction issued on August 8th 2019<\/a>, this is a departure from the previous prediction of just 30% for the year which was issued in May.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander explained that the prediction of an above normal hurricane season is due to a weak or non existent El Nino this season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;The result of El Nino is \u2026it provides a lot of wind shear over the Atlantic that would impede\u2026 the formation of tropical cyclones&#8230;&#8221;, Alexander stated. He added that because, &#8220;El Nino is no more&#8230;conditions could be favourable for tropical cyclone development in the Atlantic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>By way of comparison, the projection almost exactly mirrors the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/media-release\/above-normal-atlantic-hurricane-season-is-most-likely-year\"> prediction for the 2017 hurricane season<\/a> which saw the advent of Hurricane Irma and Maria that wrought unprecedented destruction across the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>2017 also saw a weak El Nino with none of the mitigating wind shear that may impede the formation of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that the prediction is a percentage chance which does not guarantee the same result even if the figures are the same or similar with previous years.<\/p>\n<p>However, the NOAA prediction is still the best forecast we have to anticipate and prepare for the hurricane season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Acting senior meteorological officer, Marshal Alexander, has indicated that there is a 45% chance of an above normal hurricane season in 2019.
