The executive of the newly revamped Association of Music Professionals (AMP) extends Happy #BouyonDay greetings to all lovers and practitioners of the Dominican musical genre. The new executive (elected on January 30, 2021) is making a special appeal to everyone to celebrate this special day and the Carnival Season virtually.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the presence of COVID-19, it is a different Bouyon Day than we anticipated but nevertheless, we encourage all Dominicans and fans of Bouyon music around the globe to celebrate this special day in a safe and responsible way- preferably inside, enjoying virtual sessions with close family and friends,\u201d says AMP President Sheldon \u201cShelly\u201d Alfred, lead vocalist of the Signal Band.<\/p>\n

The Association also encourages the media in particular to support Bouyon music by playing songs on all media platforms and promoting as many different bands and individual artists as they can.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an opportunity to highlight new acts and feature old favourites,\u201d says Board member and Bouyon producer Arade \u201cMaskman\u201d Moses. \u201cWhere we show appreciation to the bands, artists, producers, who work tirelessly for the community of this indigenous, home-grown sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bouyon Day is celebrated each year on the Tuesday preceding Carnival Monday and Tuesday and was started in 2015 by then\u00a0Advertising and Promotions Officer of the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC),\u00a0Val Cuffy and DBS Radio as a way to promote the genre.<\/p>\n

The WCK Band has been credited with pioneering the sound in the 80s, which has evolved to include several styles and even be incorporated by artists in other Caribbean islands including St. Lucia, Guadeloupe and Antigua.\u00a0\u00a0Major regional acts who have adopted the Bouyon sound in their style include Trinidad\u2019s Machel Montano, Motto of St. Lucia and Bajan star, Rupee.<\/p>\n

Current Bouyon acts include Asa Bantan, Carlyn XP, Reo, Starsha, Trilla G, Keks Mafia, Fetty Mark and Alisha. Triple Kay International and Signal Band are notable bands currently creating Bouyon music. Though many may not be familiar with all the behind the scenes personas, top Bouyon producers right now include Cornell \u201cFingers\u201d Phillip (Carlyn XP), Krishna \u201cDada\u201d Lawrence (Machel Montano), Cecil \u201cDaWizZard\u201d Joseph Jr. (Starsha, Shelly, Reo), Kendel \u201cKilla\u201d Laurant (Triple Kay International), Earlson \u201cLittle Man\u201d Matthew (WCK), Achille \u201cDJ Shil\u201d Eli (Kenny G, Vader, Deluxe F),\u00a0Tafari \u201cDj Taffy\u201dMaffei\u00a0(Reo),\u00a0Marvin “Tewa” Jno Baptiste (Nayee, Asa Bantan)\u00a0and Gildon George AKA DJ Flip (Big Red, Reo, Alicia)\u00a0\u00a0to name a few.<\/p>\n

Formed in 2008, AMP is a representative body for music professionals with the aim of forming partnerships and building capacity among members, educating members and the public about the music industry and strengthening national identity through the promotion of local music.<\/p>\n

The new executive comprises: Sheldon \u201cShelly\u201d Alfred- President, Michele Henderson- Vice President, Ayeola George- Public Relations Officer, Yuri Jones- Treasurer, Colton \u201cColton T\u201d Thomas- Secretary, Marie Pascale \u201cMP\u201d Affana- Assistant Secretary, Dion Henderson- Executive Member, Arden Ford- Board Member and Arade \u201cMaskman\u201d Moses- Board Member.<\/p>\n
