Minister of\u00a0 Health Julius Timothy is supporting a move to charge eight members of the United Workers Party (UWP) for not complying with the Public Order Act.<\/p>\n

Members of the UWP and supporters staged protest action on November 29, 2010 against the Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd-Knights, claiming she did not allow several of their questions to go through in parliament.<\/p>\n

Timothy, a former deputy leader of the UWP who has since crossed the floor to join the Dominica Labour Party, told the Next Level Programme on Kairi FM that his former colleagues were aware of the implications of their action and they should be dealt with accordingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe law clearly says you need permission,” Timothy said. “In fact the UWP has had demonstrations in the past and they have always sought permission. Why all of a sudden they think that they are above the law? I don\u2019t see any difficulties in that.”<\/p>\n

Timothy\u00a0 said several other persons around Dominica have been charged in the past for staging illegal protest actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the people in the Carib Territory had the protest they were charged,” he stressed. “The people in Layou are being charged. So if the UWP broke the law why is it they think they should not be charged?”<\/p>\n

Those charged are Opposition Leader Hector John, UWP Leader Ron Green, Deputy Leader Claudius Sanford, UWP President Edison James, Ezekiel Bazil, Norris Charles, Ronnie Isidore and Danny Lugay.<\/p>\n

They are expected to appear in court on June 6 to answer charges under section three of the Public Order Act which states that \u201cit shall be unlawful for any public procession to take place unless a permit has been issued in respect thereof in accordance with this act\u201d.<\/p>\n
