{"id":276853,"date":"2021-11-05T12:19:02","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T16:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=276853"},"modified":"2021-11-05T12:19:02","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T16:19:02","slug":"health-and-social-equity-must-form-beating-heart-of-cop26-negotiations-global-climate-and-health-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/health-and-social-equity-must-form-beating-heart-of-cop26-negotiations-global-climate-and-health-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Health and social equity must form beating heart of COP26 negotiations &#8211; Global Climate and Health Alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-276854\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/COP26-health.jpg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/COP26-health.jpg.png 445w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/COP26-health.jpg-300x152.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/>World leaders must make health and social equity the beating heart of COP26 negotiations, by taking concerted action to limit global heating to less than 1.5C in line with Paris Climate Agreement and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5475c87a193703ceb22db679d&amp;id=2eb0d65c66&amp;e=1dd07e21ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5475c87a193703ceb22db679d%26id%3D2eb0d65c66%26e%3D1dd07e21ad&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1636214034279000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFXk0jSzq-Pvb4T8oV8E9eC_3fbJQ\">findings of the scientific community<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0delivering a rapid and just transition away from fossil fuels &#8211; beginning with immediate cuts to subsidies, said the Global Climate and Health Alliance today [1].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are dying and being harmed\u00a0<em>now<\/em>\u00a0by climate change: the decisions made in these next two weeks will define the health and wellbeing of people all over the world for decades to come\u201d, said Jeni Miller Executive Director at the Global Climate and Health Alliance, made up of health professional organizations, health NGOs, and health and environment alliances from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt COP26, national leaders must prioritise health and social equity over politics, profit and unproven technological fixes\u201d, added Miller. \u201cHealth and equity must become the lynchpin around which action is taken to reduce global emissions, in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change on human health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global climate crisis is clearly also a growing health crisis and is already having an unprecedented impact on people\u2019s lives and wellbeing worldwide, with devastating heat waves and other extreme weather events causing deaths, and drought driving millions of people in already-vulnerable communities to the brink of famine\u201d, said Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent climate commitments have us on the path for temperature rises of between 2.7 and 3.1 degrees Celcius this century. COP26 delegations must work together towards getting emissions in line with the 1.5C limit agreed six years ago in Paris, if we are to prevent catastrophic harm to people\u2019s health and wellbeing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo achieve this, governments must agree to phase out public funding and facilitating of fossil fuels, with high income countries &#8211; which bear the responsibility for the bulk of climate warming emissions to date &#8211; making the greatest cuts the fastest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh income countries must also deliver the promised\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5475c87a193703ceb22db679d&amp;id=70cf909161&amp;e=1dd07e21ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5475c87a193703ceb22db679d%26id%3D70cf909161%26e%3D1dd07e21ad&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1636214034279000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGLzjjuPM7n6ZMwMXqenUXF48nGTQ\">US$100B climate finance<\/a>\u00a0per year to support lower income countries to address climate change, including funds to help countries protect their people and their health systems from the impacts of climate change we are already seeing, as well as funds to support climate mitigation measures.\u201d [2]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, every government must commit to building climate resilient, low-carbon, sustainable health systems, while leveraging the unparalleled public funding being invested in Covid-19 recovery packages to support climate action, and reduce social and health inequities, thus averting an even greater threat to health and economies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountries that actually deliver on commitments, policies, and investments to tackle climate change, and that do so with health &amp; equity explicitly in mind, will reap the greatest health benefits for their populace, and see health cost savings, while doing their part to avert far greater warming. From cleaner air, to secure access to healthy foods, to safer streets and healthier more livable cities &#8212; the potential benefits to people\u2019s health and wellbeing in countries that act on climate change are immense\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In October, more than 500 organisations representing 46 million nurses, doctors and health professionals worldwide \u2013 about two thirds of the global health workforce<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5475c87a193703ceb22db679d&amp;id=9f0ea78c16&amp;e=1dd07e21ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/climateandhealthalliance.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5475c87a193703ceb22db679d%26id%3D9f0ea78c16%26e%3D1dd07e21ad&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1636214034279000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE6x5Og4PnByLHdxiTHnvIDA3ipAQ\"><strong>\u00a0signed an open letter\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>to the 197 government leaders and national delegations ahead of COP26, warning that the climate crisis is the single biggest health threat facing humanity, and calling on world leaders to deliver on climate action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe health community worldwide is calling for action on climate change because we recognize it as a major threat to health, and because climate action presents huge opportunities for health. What we want to see out of COP is a recommitment to the promises made, in service of the \u201cright to health,\u201d in the Paris Agreement.
