Hurricane Maria took a lot, including our two cars. \u00a0They were taken by an avalanche of boulders that rolled by our home in Trafalgar. \u00a0When the insurance adjuster came to visit to \u201csee\u201d the vehicles, and we explained they were gone and had never been seen again, he said \u201cI will have to check with head office as we always need to see the damage to verify the claim.\u201d \u00a0Well, thankfully, insurance paid and in considering what vehicles to purchase, my wife Sandra and I were quick to think \u201cwhy not an EV (electric vehicle)?\u201d. \u00a0Our friends Tim and Jessica had a Nissan Leaf (Dominica\u2019s first EV<\/u><\/a>), and Barbados was full of Leafs, so we decide to go that route. \u00a0Our two new Leafs arrived May 2019, and we\u2019ve never looked back.<\/p>\n

Why the love affair?<\/p>\n

EVs are Better for the Environment and for neighborhoods. \u00a0No fumes, no emissions, no noise\u2026\u2026.. because there is no \u201cengine\u201d, no muffler!<\/p>\n

EVs require very little Maintenance. \u00a0There is no oil or filter changes required, no spark plugs, no pistons, no injectors, no \u201cengine\u201d. \u00a0In three years the only maintenance has been flat tires. \u00a0Big savings.<\/p>\n

EVs are Much Cheaper than Gas. \u00a0We spend about 1\/5th<\/sup>\u00a0in electricity when compared to what we spent on fuel, and that\u2019s when fuel prices are \u201cnormal\u201d \u2013 now savings would be greater.<\/p>\n

EVs are Beautifully Silent. \u00a0No noise of engine starting, no noise when running. \u00a0Listen to the sounds of nature instead, or your favorite music.<\/p>\n

EVs have Speed. \u00a0These cars can overtake almost anything, and on a hill too! \u00a0But please don\u2019t abuse that power with fast driving.<\/p>\n

EVs are easy to Charge. \u00a0One charge takes about 4 hours and gives you 200km of driving. \u00a0So I charge 2 \u2013 3 times a week, and Sandra charges 1 \u2013 2 times. \u00a0And we charge at night, while sleeping. \u00a0There is also a mobile charger in the trunk so you can plug into any a\/c outlet if you every get stuck. \u00a0Happened to Sandra once when her battery was very low, so she pulled into a friend\u2019s yard, plugged in for a short while, and continued home.<\/p>\n

EVs Recharge Downhill. \u00a0I love to drive from Pont Cass\u00e9\u00a0to anywhere \u2013 The EV gains charge, because its mostly downhill. \u00a0For Dominica, that\u2019s a big plus.<\/p>\n

But like with any affair, there are a few complications. \u00a0First, they are not cheap to buy. \u00a0Leafs range between us$10,000 for a used one and use$40,000 for a new one, and when you add excise tax and other taxes, it is plenty money. \u00a0Second complication is that no local dealer has stepped into the sales and service business so parts are not readily available (but again, we have not needed any in 3 years other than as a result of my recent accident where the front got damaged).<\/p>\n

Dominica has about 6 EVs currently, Barbados has 700. \u00a0And we are the Nature Island! \u00a0Government has removed duty but we need more aggressive incentives (a limited time without excise tax)\u00a0so that we can get to 50 very soon, and grow from there. \u00a0That will create some traction and more confidence. \u00a0Secret Bay and Fort Young will have EV charging stations in the future, and hopefully the airport will as well\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n

Imagine visitors arriving to Dominica and being welcomed into an EV taxi. \u00a0Now that\u2019s a nature island experience. There are also electric scooters, skateboards, bicycles and motorcycles \u2013 all transformative experiences and better for the environment and great options for private and public mobility. \u00a0We highly recommend the \u201celectric mobility\u201d experience. \u00a0Its truly amazing.<\/p>\n

And this from electrec.co<\/u><\/a>:\u00a0\u201c<\/i><\/em>In 2019, 2.2 million electric cars\u00a0were sold, representing just 2.5% of global car sales. In 2020, the overall car market contracted but electric car sales bucked the trend, rising to 3 million and representing 4.1% of total car sales. In 2021, electric car sales more than doubled to 6.6 million, representing close to 9% of the global car market and more than tripling their market share from two years earlier.<\/i><\/em>\u201d<\/i><\/em>\u00a0<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

So this is an irreversible trend and a specific choice and action we can make\/take to kick the fossil fuel dependency and counter global warming\u2026.. we need to get on board for the ride\u2026.. especially our Nature Island ride.<\/p>\n
