Government is in the process of providing certification to farmers to be able to plant and grow marijuana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that come next year Dominica will be in the position to develop a marijuana industry.<\/p>\n

He made\u00a0the announcement during the Focus on Government and Development program held recently.<\/p>\n

In 2020 the Parliament of Dominica approved a Bill for an Act to decriminalize the possession of 28 grams (one ounce) or less of cannabis (Marijuana).<\/p>\n

The Amendment to the Drugs Prevention of Misuse Act was passed in Parliament on Monday, October 26, 2020.<\/p>\n

The Act applies to Dominicans 18 years and above.<\/p>\n

The government also recommends that one can cultivate no more than three Cannabis plants at his\/ her place of residence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe come next year we will certainly be in a position to pass this legislation and have a full-fledged cannabis (marijuana) industry in Dominica so that we can take advantage of numerous opportunities where cannabis is concerned,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to Prime Minister Skerrit, it was announced in this year\u2019s budget that permits and licenses will be provided for people producing marijuana oils, creams, lotions, and soaps.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we recognize that there are a number of Dominican citizens who are suffering from cancer [and] do use the marijuana oil to bring some relief to them and there are many testimonies of it working,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

He said his government is in the process of putting these mechanisms in place and providing certification to farmers to be able to plant and grow marijuana.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he explained that early this year, technical support was received from the Canadian Government to draft the legislation to deal with cannabis [marijuana] as a medicinal industry for export.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a number of processes we have to go through to get to that level,\u201d Skerrit indicated.<\/p>\n

He explained that the Canadians, through a project, are helping the government in that regard.<\/p>\n
