Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has stated that his government will review measures and embark on new actions to ensure total peace in the country.<\/p>\n
\u00a0He made the announcement while addressing a press conference this week.<\/p>\n
Dominica has reported its first suspected homicide for the year and a robbery at Mero which left one man nursing a gunshot wound at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH).<\/p>\n
\u201cAs far as this administration is concerned we will review measures and embark on new actions to ensure total peace and safety in our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Skerrit continued, \u201cUnfortunately our island has seen some tragic domestic and public incidents in recent times which [have] put focus on the peace and security of the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the Prime Minister, these incidents highlight the fragility of a democratic society where members of society have to observe decency and respect in dealing with each other.<\/p>\n
\u201cEspecially with this emerging period of Carnival where our communities are coming together to enjoy this unique festival, there might be a few who may be inclined to use this period of revelry for acts of violence,\u201d he remarked. \u201cAnd to otherwise instill a level of fear in society.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister declared that there would be a policy of “zero tolerance for any decadent behavior in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that the CDPF will show zero tolerance for acts of violence related to events surrounding Carnival.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn turn, any event or band which cannot maintain an atmosphere of peace and civility will be stopped and curtailed where there is tangible threat to any citizen on our island,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n
He made it clear that organizers of all events are responsible for ensuring that security for said events is in place and that patrons are safe.<\/p>\n
Skerrit went on to state with regard to anyone found with unlicensed firearms or any weaponry deemed unsafe or dangerous, \u201cwe will have them confiscated and will be detained under the laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica where applicable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo exceptions will be made, Carnival or no Carnival,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n
He said there will be increased patrols and random searches of anyone exhibiting suspicious behavior, \u201cto further emphasize our zero-tolerance approach.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also addressed the issue of road safety in Dominica.<\/p>\n
Road safety is an integral part of being able to live in a safe environment,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the last few months however, we have seen far too many incidents and too many of our drivers and bikers are using our roads without care and attention, and with little regard for their own safety and that of others.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pointed out that unnecessary speeding and driving under the influence of substances have been identified as key components of the increase.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a few cases, there are also [situations] where some vehicles are just not road worthy and their very use is in violation of some of our traffic regulations,\u201d Skerrit explained.<\/p>\n
He said the police will increase its monitoring in that regard and will seek to clamp down on speeders, \u201cand in this Carnival period, especially on people who will insist on drinking and driving.\u201d<\/p>\n
