{"id":297787,"date":"2023-01-24T17:27:46","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T21:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=297787"},"modified":"2023-01-24T17:27:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T21:27:46","slug":"dominican-named-captain-of-windward-island-volcanoes-cricket-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/dominican-named-captain-of-windward-island-volcanoes-cricket-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Dominican named captain of Windward Island Volcanoes Cricket Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_297788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-297788\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-297788\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes-642x586.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes-642x586.jpg 642w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes-300x274.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes-768x701.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes-526x480.jpg 526w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Volcanoes.jpg 843w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-297788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Athanaze<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Twenty-four-year-old left-handed batsman, Dominican, Alick Athanaze has been named Captain of the Windwards Volcanoes for the 2023 West Indies Championship.<\/p>\n<p>The championship gives him the opportunity to begin his captaincy career for the Windward\u2019s Volcanoes in their first match of the 2023 West Indies Championship against Trinidad &amp; Tobago Red Force.<\/p>\n<p>The game is expected to take place at the Grenada National Stadium, from January 31 to February 3, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The young Dominican cricketer made his List A debut for the West Indies Under-19s in the 2016\u201317 Regional Super50 on 25 January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>That same year he made it to the West Indies squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>It was after that tournament that many in the cricket world took note of his talent since he was the leading run scorer and the second batsman from the West Indies to score two centuries in the same tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed \u201cthe little magician from Dominica\u201d by West Indies Cricket, he finished the tournament with 418 runs, just short of the record of 421 set by Donovan Pagon.<\/p>\n<p>The International Cricket Countil labelled him as the rising star in West Indies cricket and said he has the potential to be the first Dominican to represent the senior Men&#8217;s side since Shane Shillingford in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>After the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, he returned to Dominica to a triumphant welcome.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2018, he made it to the Cricket West Indies B Team squad for the inaugural edition of the Global T20 Canada tournament.<\/p>\n<p>His first-class debut was made for the Windward Islands in the 2018\u201319 Regional Four Day Competition on 6 December 2018 and in October 2019, he made it to the Windward Islands&#8217; squad for the 2019\u201320 Regional Super50 tournament.<\/p>\n<p>In an opinion piece published in November, 2022 on cricketwestindies.com entitled &#8220;ALICK ATHANAZE &#8211; A STAR IS BORN,&#8221; author \u00a0Machel St Patrick Hewitt wrote, &#8220;Having tasted West Indies A honours earlier this year vs Bangladesh A, Athanaze is clearly a player on the radar of selectors&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It seems the future is bright for this young Dominican cricketer.<\/p>\n<p>The full Windwards Volcanoes Squad for the first round of matches reads:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Alick Athanaze (Captain)<\/li>\n<li>Preston Mc Sween (Vice-Captain)<\/li>\n<li>Kimani Melius<\/li>\n<li>Jerlani Robinson<\/li>\n<li>Kavem Hodge<\/li>\n<li>Sunil Ambris<\/li>\n<li>Teddy Bishop<\/li>\n<li>Justin Greaves<\/li>\n<li>Tevyn Walcott (Wicket-keeper)<\/li>\n<li>Keron Cottoy<\/li>\n<li>Kenneth Dember<\/li>\n<li>Daurius Martin<\/li>\n<li>Nicklaus Redhead<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Twenty-four-year-old left-handed batsman, Dominican, Alick Athanaze has been named Captain of the Windwards Volcanoes for the 2023 West Indies Championship.
