Melvin “Solo” Constant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Former four-time calypso monarch, Melvin Constant, stage name Solo, will be laid to rest today.<\/p>\n

He was the victim of Dominica\u2019s first drowning incident in 2023.<\/p>\n

The 74-year-old Bath Estate native who resided in Maybrook New York, in the\u00a0 United States of America (USA), was on vacation in Dominica when he passed.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, January 1, 2023, at about 1:45 pm, Constant was on a whale-watching tour with some of his family members when he is said to have drowned.<\/p>\n

Solo was also known for his memorable revellers\u2019 anthem, \u201cMass in the Cemetery\u201d.\u00a0 Solo\u2019s journey on the throne officially began in 1973 when \u201cBlack Man Leads the Way\u201d and \u201cI Pleasing Me Fans\u201d placed him firmly on the throne.<\/p>\n

Following a brief interruption in 1974, he held a grip on the calypso monarch title for three straight years in 1975, 1976, and 1977.<\/p>\n

Although he was based in the USA, he continued to be active in the music industry, performing in competitions abroad.<\/p>\n

The body of King Solo will be laid to rest following a funeral mass at the Roseau Cathedral Chapel at 3:00pm.<\/p>\n
