{"id":300447,"date":"2023-03-21T07:00:29","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=300447"},"modified":"2023-03-21T00:40:54","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T04:40:54","slug":"mehul-choksi-off-interpols-wanted-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/mehul-choksi-off-interpols-wanted-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Mehul Choksi off Interpol\u2019s wanted list"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_268296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268296\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-268296\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Choksi-642x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-268296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mehul Choksi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a very surprising move, Interpol has removed its Red Notice Alert against Indian diamond dealer Mehul Choksi, who is wanted by India for his connection in a $2 billion fraud at the Punjab National Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The removal of the Red Notice means Mehul Choksi can travel out of Antigua and Barbuda, of which he is a citizen.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Notice was issued in 2018, about 10 months after Choksi fled to the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda where he received citizenship by investment<\/p>\n<p>The Indian government has been contesting the removal of Choksi\u2019s name from the Interpol wanted list but reports are that Interpol found credence in Choksi\u2019s allegation that Indian agencies attempted to abduct him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is credible possibility that the applicant\u2019s abduction from Antigua to Dominica had the ultimate purpose of deporting the applicant to India,\u201d Interpol said in its order, saying that Choksi may face the risk of \u201cnot receiving a fair trial or treatment if returned to India\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Choksi said the decision of Interpol to delete the Red Notice strengthens Choksi\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report from the Antiguan police, and the evidence offered by Choksi in the ongoing High Court proceedings in Antigua, point to an alarming case of a state-orchestrated kidnap, torture, and attempted rendition by the Indian government,\u201d the spokesperson said<\/p>\n<p>On May 23, 2021, Choksi mysteriously disappeared from Antigua and Barbuda. He claimed he was abducted by Indian agents and was taken on a yacht to Dominica. Choksi said he was beaten severely on the way.<\/p>\n<p>He was charged with illegal entry into Dominica only to find that days after, on May 28<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">, <\/span>to be exact, the Indian government flew in a team of investigators in the hope of securing his deportation from the island, where he was not a citizen.<\/p>\n<p>However, Choksi, through a team of lawyers in Dominica filed a habeas corpus in the high court alleging abduction and torture. After spending about 51 days in Dominica under arrest, Choksi was allowed to return to Antigua for further medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>He suffers from neurological problems as well as heart disease. He was ordered to return to Dominica once his health improves. However, the charges were later dropped against Choksi.<\/p>\n<p>The Antigua Royal Police launched an abduction probe into the matter based on Choksi\u2019s lawyers\u2019 complaint.
