Sen. Lorraine Henderson-Reid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tourism Minister Denise Charles has disagreed with statements made by Opposition Senator Lorraine Henderson-Reid who called for mandatory DNA Testing of all children in Dominica at birth.<\/p>\n

Henderson-Reid who was delivering remarks during the debate of the Maintenance of Children Act in Parliament this week, said mandatory DNA testing is necessary whether the baby is from marriage or not.<\/p>\n

According to her, \u201cThis will avoid some fathers from paying child support to children that are not theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Minister Charles is of the view\u00a0 that proposing mandatory DNA testing for all children born, infringes on the fundamental right to privacy and bodily autonomy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a clear violation of our constitution which safeguards the rights of all citizens, irrespective of gender,\u201d she argued. \u201cLet us focus on the spirit of the Maintenance Act 2023 which seeks to provide a just and equitable legal framework to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles added, \u201cLet us move forward with progressive and inclusive policy-making that respects the dignity and rights of all citizens in the Commonwealth of Dominica.\u201d<\/p>\n
