{"id":303421,"date":"2023-05-26T10:38:35","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T14:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=303421"},"modified":"2023-05-26T10:50:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T14:50:17","slug":"a-13-year-old-among-five-in-custody-for-rape-in-antigua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/a-13-year-old-among-five-in-custody-for-rape-in-antigua\/","title":{"rendered":"A 13-year-old among five in custody for rape in Antigua"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-303422\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pexels-kindel-media-7714795-642x428.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 13-year-old boy is among five teenagers held by police in connection with the brutal rape of a 46-year-old woman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government reported Thursday during its weekly press conference that\u00a0five suspects are in custody for raping a 46-year-old woman on May 15 &#8211; one is 13, two are 15, and two are 17 years old.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to reports, the woman, while walking home from work recently was attacked by the younger who demanded her valuables.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they searched her bag and her person, they realized she had nothing of value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They then dragged her into the bushes and raped her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is not clear whether these minors will face any jail time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the country\u2019s Child Justice Act of 2015, minors under age 12 cannot be held liable for criminal offences, but minors over 14 are liable to spend no more than three years in prison if \u201cthe offence for which the child is convicted is an offence listed under Schedule III, or murder or treason\u201d, and if\u00a0 \u201csubstantial and compelling reasons exist for imposing a sentence of imprisonment, which may include a previous failure to respond to alternative sentences, including sentences with a residential element and where the court imposing sentence considers that no other sentence is appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children between 12 and 13 cannot receive jail time but are liable to receive other types of sentences such as referral to counselling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&nbsp; A 13-year-old boy is among five teenagers held by police in connection with the brutal rape of a 46-year-old woman.
