The <\/span>Dominica <\/span>Public Service <\/span>Union <\/span>is <\/span>saddened <\/span>by <\/span>the <\/span>passing of <\/span>an outstanding <\/span>comrade <\/span>and <\/span>colleague<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bro Alvin <\/span>Serrant<\/span>, <\/span>former <\/span>President <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>Waterfront <\/span>and <\/span>Allied Workers <\/span>Union <\/span>(<\/b>WAWU<\/b>)<\/b>, <\/span>was <\/span>a <\/span>patriotic son <\/span>of <\/span>the soil<\/span>. <\/span>He was soft-spoken<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>but <\/span>forthright <\/span>and <\/span>possessed <\/span>result <\/span>oriented <\/span>leadership skills<\/span>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Alvin <\/span>was <\/span>illustrious <\/span>but <\/span>was <\/span>a <\/span>very humble <\/span>leader<\/span>. <\/span>The latter <\/span>may <\/span>have <\/span>resulted <\/span>in <\/span>him <\/span>not <\/span>always <\/span>being <\/span>in the limelight. <\/span>During <\/span>his years <\/span>of <\/span>being <\/span>a <\/span>trade <\/span>unionist, <\/span>Alvin’s <\/span>contribution <\/span>was <\/span>visible <\/span>not <\/span>only locally <\/span>but <\/span>regionally<\/span>. <\/span>He <\/span>also <\/span>had exposure <\/span>at <\/span>the <\/span>international <\/span>level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Much <\/span>of <\/span>WAWU’s <\/span>successes <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>’80s <\/span>and <\/span>’90s <\/span>can <\/span>be <\/span>attributed <\/span>to <\/span>the <\/span>trio of <\/span>Louis <\/span>Bennoit<\/span>, <\/b>Kertiste Augustus, <\/span>and <\/span>Alvin <\/span>Serrant<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many <\/span>of the <\/span>benefits <\/span>gained <\/span>by stevedores <\/span>and <\/span>longshore <\/span>workers <\/span>were <\/span>possible <\/span>because <\/span>of <\/span>Comrade <\/span>Serrant’s <\/span>input<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alvin <\/span>came<\/span>, <\/span>he <\/span>served <\/span>and <\/span>now he <\/span>has <\/span>departed<\/span>. <\/span>It <\/span>is <\/span>left <\/span>to <\/span>those <\/span>who <\/span>are <\/span>still <\/span>here <\/span>and <\/span>those <\/span>to <\/span>come <\/span>to <\/span>build <\/span>on <\/span>the <\/span>foundation <\/span>which <\/span>he <\/span>helped <\/span>in <\/span>creating<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rest <\/span>peacefully, <\/span>Bro <\/span>Alvin<\/span>. <\/span>Thanks <\/span>for <\/span>your <\/span>contribution<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
