The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries with outstanding arrears to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) have decided to make their payments in contribution to the longevity of the agency.<\/p>\n
Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore said the ministers met during a meeting of Council of Ministers held in St Lucia last week.<\/p>\n
According to him, over the years CDEMA has done a fantastic job in managing and coordinating CARICOM response so far as disaster is concerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe met at the ministerial council level in St Lucia. One of the highlights was the approval of the recommendations for the sustainable financing of CDEMA,\u201d Blackmoore said.<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cAnd firstly, to ensure that member-states pay their contribution, to ensure that CDEMA from an administrational standpoint continues to operate with utmost efficiency and effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cSecondly to give CDEMA, through of course the Executive Director the ability to seek funding from potential donor agencies to finance the operation of CDEMA.\u201d<\/p>\n
That he believes was significant, \u201cand we have to ensure that the financing aspect of CDEMA is sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were able to get all member-states to commit to meet the contribution,\u201d Blackmoore stated.<\/p>\n
He said Dominica has been current with CDEMA over the years, even when the country was affected by Covid-19 and Hurricane Maria.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have always been current so far as our contribution is concerned,\u201d Blackmoore said.<\/p>\n
The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is a regional intergovernmental agency for disaster management in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).<\/p>\n
The Agency was established in 1991 as CDERA (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency) with primary responsibility for the coordination of emergency response and relief efforts to participating states that require such assistance. It transitioned to CDEMA in 2009 to fully embrace the principles and practice of Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM).<\/p>\n
Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) is an integrated and proactive approach to disaster management and seeks to reduce the risk and loss associated with natural and technological hazards and the effects of climate change to enhance regional sustainable development.<\/p>\n
