The Dominica Cooperative Societies League Ltd. (DCSLL)\u00a0 has granted 22 students in Dominica scholarships and bursaries to attend Secondary School. Two scholarships and 20 bursaries were distributed.<\/p>\n
The Beneficiaries were Kaia Meade, Niquandel Albert, Achazia Tanisha Leblanc, Mickhael Pacquette, Che\u2019nelle Xavier, Aayden Eugene, Rickara Prescott, Kiniya Pacquette, Kirlisa Prince, Sherline Leblanc, Serena Shillingford, Myles Samuel, Liam Massicott, Aziah Prince, Deborah Hill, Riel Thomas, Devante James, and Kijanie Henry.<\/p>\n
The scholarship\/bursaries presentation took place at the Prevo Cinemall Ballroom on Monday.\u00a0 Treasurer of the Dominica Cooperative Societies League, Portia Tyson said they are excited to continue this program to assist students and families in need.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled to continue our contribution to the academic and upward progress of families in Dominica through the DCSLL Scholarship,\u201d she expressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cGeoffrey Robinson Scholarship for merit and Sister Alicia Scholarship for need, and additionally this year we will be giving out 20 bursaries to deserving students.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Geoffrey Robinson Merit Scholarship Award went to Haley Bedneau, while the Sister Alicia Scholarship for Need went to Corey Ferreira. Geoffrey Robinson scholarship was first carried out in 1986 and sister Alicia in 1994.\u00a0Tyson revealed that the scholarship comprises of all school fees, 100% books, and stationaries, a uniform allowance in the first and third year, a commuter allowance, and 100% examination fees.<\/p>\n
She said at the DCSLL, they are convinced that education is one of the main avenues for educational and professional advancement and plays a critical aspect in our corporate and social responsibility program.<\/p>\n
She said DCSLL’s focus on access to education is not only for their employees and their families but for the community in their area of influence and especially young people from low-income households.\u00a0\u00a0Tyson expressed that young people are the present and the future of the nation and that their level of education is a basic factor for a country’s development and growth.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to UNICEF, without quality education, children face considerable barriers with employment and earning potential later in life,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are more likely to suffer adverse health outcomes and less likely to participate in decisions that affect them; threatening their ability to shape a better future for themselves and their societies.\u201d<\/p>\n
DCSLL brought financial support to more than 22 students annually since 2017 after raising their bursaries from 5 to 20 students.<\/p>\n
