{"id":308914,"date":"2023-10-01T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T13:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=308914"},"modified":"2023-10-01T01:48:49","modified_gmt":"2023-10-01T05:48:49","slug":"senator-oscar-george-highlights-the-need-to-capitalize-on-international-cricket-in-dominica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/senator-oscar-george-highlights-the-need-to-capitalize-on-international-cricket-in-dominica\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator Oscar George highlights the need to capitalize on international cricket in Dominica"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_308915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-308915\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-308915\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Oscar-George-file-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-308915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oscar George<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Senator Oscar George has advised the Dominican public to position themselves to do what is required to reap maximum benefits whenever international cricket is played in Dominica.<\/p>\n<p>His advice came as Dominica is preparing to host the ICC Men\u2019s T20 World Cup 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Dominica is among seven venues in the Caribbean that will host the\u00a0ICC Men\u2019s T20 World Cup 2024 from June 4 to 30.\u00a0The International Cricket Council (ICC) on September 22 confirmed that Antigua &amp; Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad &amp; Tobago, will host games along with three venues in the USA \u2013Dallas, Florida and New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I will advise is that we make the most of any international game that comes to our shores,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cJust to host an international cricket match the government has to find in the region of $US200,000 to contribute to the organizers to help defer their cost. As you know cricket is a very expensive sport, but we continue to invest in cricket because we believe that there exists a significant multiple effect through the local economy when cricket comes to the Windsor Park.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George said he is delighted that Dominica was named among the seven venues in the region for the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, I am very delighted that a major ICC Tournament is to be hosted in the Caribbean. We all know of the tremendous benefits that hosting these other events can have on a country, far less on a small island like Dominica, so we are very excited to be named among the seven venues in the region for the World Cup next year,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the respective governments of all the seven countries who have been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know it\u2019s the governments who expressed their willingness through a bid to be considered for this game, so hats off to all of them, and in our case, we had the initial discussions with Cricket West Indies as it relates to potentially hosting the games,\u201d George noted. \u201cWe did some groundwork in terms of assessing what we would need to do to actually be able to host and then submitted through a formal bid expressing our interest in hosting the games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he commended the ministry staff, the permanent secretary, and of course the administration staff for being so diligent in this entire process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now that we have been confirmed there are various terms and conditions as well as financial obligations on central government that we will be required to make or to do to make it a reality,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to state that these obligations will be discussed among the senior technical officials and the government will review and advise on the specific approach that will be taken as it relates to the upcoming tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut all-in-all we are just happy for getting to this stage,\u201d George noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Senator Oscar George has advised the Dominican public to position themselves to do what is required to reap maximum benefits whenever international cricket is played in Dominica&#8230;.","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":308915,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","footnotes":""},"categories":[36,286,77,235,9,14,7,20],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-308914","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy-development","category-governance","category-homepage","category-homepage-carousel","category-news","category-regional","category-sports","category-tourism-publicity"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
