Less than 48 hours after giving the nation the assurance that load shedding would not return, the Dominica Electricity Company Limited (Domlec) has reinstated the dreaded list.<\/p>\n
During their weekly update on Monday, Dave Stamp, the company\u2019s Chief Operations Officer (COO), reassured the general public that there is no immediate threat of load shedding resuming, especially now that the independence season has concluded, and a majority of the visitors and members of the diaspora have departed from the island.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the company’s current status, \u00a0he disclosed that the relief customers experienced during the country\u2019s 45th Independence celebration was the outcome of a collaborative effort involving DOMLEC, its partners as well as the reintegration of certain equipment into the grid.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was not a coincidence,\u201d he declared. \u201cIt was the result of dedication and hard work and us coming together as a company and also as a country because we got a lot of assistance from some large customers who assisted us by coming off the grid so that their capacity will be freed up for others.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso, the fact that we brought a number of capacities that were down back in service, that helped. So certainly, with the diasporans gone, we will not return to load shedding. We can do away with that discussion. It\u2019s certainly not our intention. It is not in our interest financially and is not in our interest from a PR and from a reputation point of view, to return to load shedding,\u201d Stamp added.<\/p>\n
However, just this morning, the company uploaded the list of communities which would be affected by load shedding in the coming days. It’s important to note that the last time that the company uploaded such a list was on October 12th, 2023.<\/p>\n
First on the list of the new load shedding schedule for Wednesday, November 8, are large sections of Portsmouth to Dublanc and Fond Canie, Louisville, Silver Lake and Bath Estate.\u00a0On Thursday, November 9 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, practically all of the north coast will be without power from Portsmouth to Capuchin.\u00a0For the same time on Friday, there will be no electricity from the Fond Cole Industrial District to St Aroment.<\/p>\n
Many Dominicans, dismayed by the new load shedding schedule,\u00a0 have taken to the company social media page, expressing outrage.<\/p>\n
“So you somehow had all the power to light up a whole festival and give electricity to diaspora and visitors but now you can\u2019t keep up ?! Such a load of lies,” one person wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n
“So for the creole fest all you give people a break. Kamem kamem is all I saying. Next month is Christmas so all you will leave it on for them to have their Christmas charade in town,” another wrote.<\/p>\n
“Everything was good during the independence season tho..I guess y\u2019all dint [didn’t] want the visitors to see the misery y\u2019all have Dominicans in..awa wii,” another wrote.<\/p>\n
One person believes that the entire matter is making Dominica look like the poorest country in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
“Stop making Dominica look like the poorest Caribbean country. We can do better than that. Bring out the money,” the person wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
During the update Stamp highlighted that several measures have and will be put in place to have the country return to normalcy by the end of the month into early December.<\/p>\n
