An additional two units leased to the Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) which arrived in Dominica on November 10, are expected to boost DOMLEC\u2019s generation and provide relief from load shedding currently being experienced.<\/p>\n
This was according to Prime Minister Rosevelt Skerrit during a press conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The units will be installed and commissioned by November 30, 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cDOMLEC has entered into a rental agreement with Aggreko, a US-based generator rental firm to lease two units generating 3 megawatts of electricity,\u201d he said. \u201cThe 3 megawatts units arrived on island on Friday, November 10, and should be online by November 30, 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cThis will boost DOMLEC\u2019s generation capacity and provide relief from the load shedding currently being experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n
Skerrit said his government procured additional generator units amounting to 4.8 megawatts of power which will be leased to DOMLEC by the government on very favorable terms. \u201cAnd of course, the whole intention of that is to ensure that whatever the terms that we are entering with DOMLEC, it won\u2019t trigger an increase in the cost of electricity to our consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the unit will be shipped to Dominica on December 2, 2023 \u201cand once they get in by very early next year, we will be in a position to have them connected to the grid. I believe that will address the generation capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Skerrit said his government will provide DOMLEC with all the support it requires.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, he advises DOMLEC to engage the public more when sharing information as far as load shedding is concerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy only admonition to DOMLEC is that I believe DOMLEC has a duty, an obligation, and responsibility to speak more to the Dominican public,\u201d he remarked. \u201cIt should not take me to tell the public that the generators arrived on November 10. That is DOMLEC\u2019s responsibility and I think they need to engage the public and share information\u2026people need to know what is happening so that they can organize themselves much better.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cEven the way we communicate, the communities that are to receive load shedding DOMLEC has to review this.\u00a0 And these WhatsApp messages that people do not read sometimes we have to find ways of communicating with the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said Dominicans are reasonable people and if they are engaged in discussion they will understand what is being done.<\/p>\n
