Dominica joins the rest of the world to observe World AIDS Day today under the theme: \u201cLet Communities Lead\u201d.<\/p>\n
World AIDS Day, designated on December 1, every year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who’ve died of the disease.<\/p>\n
Acting Coordinator of Dominica\u2019s HIV\/AIDS Response Unit, Lester Guye who spoke to State-Owned Radio DBS said response to health is not only centered around the healthcare system, but it is centered around every individual.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are looking to shift away from the Ministry of Health or Healthcare providers’ response, but communities have to respond,\u201d he said. \u201cThe same situation we presented with Covid where everybody was involved in prevention, this is what we are asking for with HIV.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he said today is a time for reflection.<\/p>\n
\u201cReflecting and supporting persons who have been infected or affected with the disease over the years and also taking the initiative to be part of the prevention,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Guye said testing is ongoing at the National HIV and AIDS Response unit from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
The office is located at 21 Hanover Street next to Western Union.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that testing will also be done in Grandbay and St Joseph in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
