In Kenya, protests broke out on Tuesday against a controversial finance bill, resulting in the deaths of several civilians. A human rights organization has reported that the death toll has now risen to at least 22 people, following initial reports of 13 deceased. The situation escalated when a furious crowd breached police barriers and stormed the parliament in Nairobi, setting parts of it ablaze. Demonstrators argue that the proposed bill would lead to steep tax increases, which would be unaffordable for both ordinary citizens and businesses.<\/p>\n

The proposed bill aims to raise taxes and fees on a variety of everyday items and services, from egg imports to bank transfers, exacerbating the financial strain on the majority of Kenyans who are already struggling to make ends meet. The government is reportedly determined to increase revenue to pay off national debt in East Africa’s economic hub.<\/p>\n

According to the Associated Press, protesters claim that since President Ruto’s administration took office in 2022, they have faced increasing tax burdens without any noticeable improvement in public services. They accuse the government of using tax revenues not to enhance social amenities but for corrupt purposes.<\/p>\n

Amidst these tensions, there have been allegations of abductions, contributing to a climate of fear, although no additional violence has been reported as of Wednesday.
