{"id":32582,"date":"2011-04-13T09:44:22","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T13:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/dno\/?p=32582"},"modified":"2011-04-13T09:44:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T13:44:22","slug":"health-talk-gas-and-gas-pains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/columns\/health-talk\/health-talk-gas-and-gas-pains\/","title":{"rendered":"HEALTH TALK: Gas and gas pains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32583 alignleft\" title=\"Doc\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/dno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Doc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Doc.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Doc-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I\u2019m pretty sure that about nine out of ten patients I\u2019ve ever seen have blamed their symptoms on gas, whether their symptoms have been in their head or their ankle.\u00a0 About one time out of a hundred, they\u2019re right.\u00a0 It\u2019s just one of those things that has been passed down through the decades.<\/p>\n<p>The urge to pass gas from your intestine can come at the worst possible moment \u2013 during an important meeting, on the bus, or on a first date.\u00a0 Passing intestinal gas (flatus) usually isn\u2019t serious, but can be seriously embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone passes gas, generally 12 or more times a day.\u00a0 But some people have excessive gas that bothers them most of the time.\u00a0 In some cases, gas you can\u2019t expel can cause intense, intermittent pain.<\/p>\n<p>The good news: although you can\u2019t stop gas from forming, a few simple measures can go a long way toward reducing the amount of gas you produce and relieving your discomfort and embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For most people, the signs and symptoms of excess gas and gas pain are all too obvious.\u00a0 They include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The voluntary or involuntary passing of gas, either as belching or as flatus.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sharp, jabbing pains or cramps in your abdomen.\u00a0 These pains may occur anywhere in your abdomen and can change locations quickly.\u00a0 Your stomach may feel \u201cknotted.\u201d The pain may be so bad sometimes that it feels like something is seriously wrong. When the pain occurs on the upper left side, gas pain may be mistaken for heart disease. When the pain occurs on the right side, it may be mistaken for appendicitis or gallstones.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Abdominal bloating (distension)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAUSES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every time you eat or drink, you swallow air.\u00a0 It happens too when you\u2019re nervous, or chew a lot of gum.\u00a0 Some of that air finds its way into your lower digestive tract (intestines).\u00a0 Most lower intestinal gas, however, is produced when bacteria there (your colon) ferment carbohydrates that aren\u2019t digested in your small intestine.\u00a0 And we eat a lot of those in Dominica, don\u2019t we?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, healthy foods \u2013 fruits, vegetables, and legumes (peas and beans) \u2013 are often the worst offenders. That\u2019s because those foods are high in fiber.\u00a0 Fiber has many health benefits, like keeping your digestive tract in good working order and regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels.\u00a0 But it can also lead to the formation of gas.\u00a0 Intestinal fiber supplements containing a substance called psyllium, such as Metamucil, may also cause such problems, especially if added to your diet too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Other causes of excess gas include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Another health condition such as diverticulitis, Crohn\u2019s disease, or ulcerative colitis.\u00a0 These are all bowel conditions, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Antibiotics.\u00a0 Antibiotics disrupt the normal bacterial flora that live in your bowel, allowing some bacteria to contribute to excess gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Laxatives.\u00a0 Excessive use of these can cause the problem of excess gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Food intolerances.\u00a0 If your gas and bloating occur mainly after eating dairy products, it could be because your body isn\u2019t able to break down the lactose in dairy foods.\u00a0 Many people have this problem after age 6, and even infants are sometimes lactose intolerant.\u00a0 Other food intolerances, especially to gluten \u2013 a protein found in wheat and some other grains \u2013 also can result in excess gas, diarrhea and weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Artificial additives.\u00a0 Some persons\u2019 systems can\u2019t tolerate the artificial sweeteners sorbitol and mannitol found in some sugar-free foods, gums and candies.\u00a0 Many healthy people get gas and diarrhea when they consume these sweeteners.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anything that causes intestinal gas or is associated with constipation or diarrhea can result in gas pain.\u00a0 These pains generally occur when gas builds up in your intestines and you\u2019re not able to expel it.\u00a0 The pains are usually intense but brief.\u00a0 Once the gas goes, so does the pain. The gas you pass is a combination of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane.\u00a0 Methane is the one that smells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RISK FACTORS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re more likely to have gas problems if you\u2019re intolerant to lactose or gluten, eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, or have a bowel condition such as those mentioned before, and irritable bowel syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Call the doctor if you have severe, prolonged or recurrent abdominal pain, especially if associated with nausea, vomiting bleeding, fever, or weight loss.\u00a0 Also, talk to your doctor if your gas or gas pains are so persistent or severe that they interfere with your ability to live a normal life.\u00a0 On most occasions, treatment can help reduce or alleviate the problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your doctor diagnoses your problem by listening to you and examining you, as always. Your abdomen will be tapped and listened to in order to determine if the sound of excess gas is present.\u00a0 Based on the findings further tests may be recommended to make sure more serious conditions aren\u2019t present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PREVENTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One or more of the following suggestions may help prevent excess gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Try to identify and avoid the foods that affect you the most.\u00a0 Some of the worst offenders include beans, onions, broccoli, prunes, apples, sugar-free candies, whole-wheat bread, bran cereals, beer, sodas and other carbonated drinks, milk, cream, ice-cream, and ice milk. Obviously, some of these foods, if not most, are good for you, so do NOT stop eating all of them.\u00a0 Just to be aware of the possible consequence and know that you can only experience gas and gas pain within your gastrointestinal tract, not in your head, your back, your chest, your joints, and so on and so on.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Try cutting back on fried and fatty foods.\u00a0 Bloating may result; fat delays stomach emptying and can increase the sensation of fullness.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Temporarily curtail high-fiber foods.\u00a0 Add them back gradually over weeks. If you take fiber supplements, do so with at least 8 ounces of water and drink plenty of extra liquids throughout each day.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce your use of dairy products.\u00a0 Try using low-lactose dairy foods like yogurt, instead of milk.\u00a0 Consuming small quantities of milk products at a time, or consuming them with other foods may make them easier to digest. If you can get your hands on something like Lactaid, use it.\u00a0 Sometimes, unfortunately, you may need to eliminate dairy foods completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Try smaller meals.\u00a0 You should be doing this anyway, not just to avoid gas; small meals and snacks, rather than two or three large meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eat slowly, chew your food thoroughly and don\u2019t gulp.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Avoid chewing gum and eating hard candies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t eat when you\u2019re anxious, upset or on the run. Your digestion can be disturbed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t smoke.\u00a0 Smoking can increase the amount of air you swallow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Try a cup of peppermint tea.\u00a0 Peppermint oil contains menthol, which appears to be able to help relax your digestive tract, relieving gas pain.\u00a0 But, it may contribute to heartburn and acid reflux.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Try using simethicone.\u00a0 Gas-X, Mylanta, Gelusil, and other over-the-counter preparations contain this.\u00a0 It helps to break up the bubbles in gas.\u00a0 Charcoal tablets may also help.\u00a0 You may not get this around here, but you can ask; natural food stores and many pharmacies have them.<\/p>\n<p>See you next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I\u2019m pretty sure that about nine out of ten patients I\u2019ve ever seen have blamed their symptoms on gas, whether their symptoms have been in their head or their ankle.\u00a0 About one time out of a hundred, they\u2019re right.\u00a0 It\u2019s&#8230;","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":32583,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-32582","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health-talk"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
