The presidential candidate was shot in one ear. One rally attendee was left dead, and several injured, following the actions of a lone gunman.<\/p>\n<p>Having first acknowledged the agency&#8217;s full responsibility for the security design and implementation on the fateful day of the shooting,\u00a0 major news outlets report that Cheatle admitted to significant security lapses at the rally where the incident occurred. Yet, initially, the security director resisted the pressure to bow out, reiterating that she was the person most suited to lead the agency.<\/p>\n<p>However, since last week, as more information has surfaced, aspects of Secret Service accounts of the events were reportedly found to contradict those of local Pennsylvania law enforcement. Consequently, the agency&#8217;s handling of Trump&#8217;s security detail has come under intense questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, failure to control access to the rooftop where the gunman perched and the handling of information passed on by local law enforcement regarding the gunman&#8217;s allegedly suspicious behavior preceding the attempt on Trump&#8217;s life have been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently succumbing to the backlash, the USSS director&#8217;s letter states that resigning was a &#8220;difficult&#8221; decision and indicated that she does not want the incident to distract agents from being fully focused on their job.<\/p>\n<p>Cheatle was appointed to her position in 2022 by President Joe Biden, following a stint in private sector security for Pepsico.
