Consultant psychiatrist at the Acute Psychiatric Unit of Dominica China Friendship Hospital, Dr. Nadia Wallace, has issued a compelling call to action in addressing mental health in Dominica.<\/p>\n

As the global community prepares to observe World Mental Health Day on October 10th, Dr. Wallace has emphasized the urgent need to prioritize mental health in the workplace, recognizing it as an essential component of occupational health and safety.<\/p>\n

She made the remarks at a press conference last week, to announce the staging of Mental Health Week from the 6th to the 12th of October this year.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cIt is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,\u201d highlights the critical importance of creating safe and healthy work environments. Dr. Wallace pointed out that such environments are fundamental rights that can significantly reduce tension and conflict, improve staff retention, and enhance job performance and productivity.<\/p>\n

World Mental Health Day, established by the World Federation of Mental Health in 1992, serves as a platform to enhance understanding, raise awareness, and facilitate action on mental health issues. This year, the community mental health team and the acute psychiatric unit will focus on the integral connection between mental health and work, underscoring the theme\u2019s relevance.<\/p>\n

Dr. Wallace\u2019s insights are particularly timely, as mental health issues such as depression and anxiety continue to be pervasive globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance. With 60% of the world\u2019s population engaged in work, and a significant portion of working-age adults experiencing mental health disorders, the economic impact is profound. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, with 12 billion working days lost annually to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity.<\/p>\n

According to Dr. Wallace, work is a social determinant of mental health, and meaningful work can promote positive mental health, prevent mental health conditions, and aid in recovery and inclusion. Conversely, she pointed out, poor working conditions can worsen mental health or exacerbate existing conditions and stigmatization, discrimination, and exclusion of individuals with mental health conditions in the workplace remain significant challenges. Many employers are reluctant to hire individuals with mental health conditions, and workers often hesitate to disclose their conditions or seek help due to fear of negative career consequences.<\/p>\n

The consultant psychiatrist stressed that mental health at work is a human rights issue and everyone has the right to the highest attainable standard of mental health and a safe and healthy work environment. To uphold these rights, she’s calling for effective policies and actions to improve mental health at work, and employment laws to adequately protect and support individuals who disclose mental health difficulties. Dr. Wallace argues that while employment is generally positive, certain working patterns, such as long hours, night shifts, and insufficient rest periods, can be detrimental to health.<\/p>\n

Her call to action is clear: it is time for employers and policymakers to recognize and address mental health as a critical aspect of occupational health and safety.<\/p>\n

As part of Mental Health Week activities, there will be a Zoom presentation to the Human Resource\u00a0 Departments of various businesses in Roseau on October 10th, Mental Health Day.
