The recent landing of a LIAT aircraft at Argyle International Airport in St Vincent and the Grenadines marks a significant milestone for the airline, which is now known as LIAT20.<\/p>\n

The inaugural flight from Antigua to St Vincent and the Grenadines was celebrated with a well-organized ceremony attended by Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, the country\u2019s prime minister, and top officials from the Ministry of Tourism in St Vincent.<\/p>\n

Hafsah Abdulsalam, the Chief Executive Officer of LIAT20, emphasized the careful consideration that went into the decision to expand operations to St Vincent and the Grenadines, highlighting the nation’s strategic importance.<\/p>\n

She also outlined ambitious plans to establish a hub in St Vincent to facilitate the movement of cargo, businesses, students, and families.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves commended the efforts and expressed support for the new airline, acknowledging Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s vision regarding LIAT20.<\/p>\n

LIAT20 aims to enhance accessibility for island-hopping in the Caribbean by expanding its services to 11 destinations, including Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n

Future plans include introducing flights to Panama, Miami, Puerto Rico, and the British Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n

Gonsalves acknowledged that while the airline hasn’t reached its “optimal point” yet, this launch represents a significant start. He hinted at the possibility of additional equity partners or support systems in the future, emphasizing LIAT’s importance to the region.<\/p>\n

This development comes after a challenging period for the original LIAT, which ended its operations in July 2020 due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the shareholder governments of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines agreed to liquidate the company.<\/p>\n

However, recognizing LIAT’s crucial role in regional transportation, the Antigua and Barbuda government sought to keep the airline operational under the new name, eventually partnering with Nigerian airline Air Peace after facing initial challenges in garnering support from other sub-regional governments.<\/p>\n
