Mental Health Day is being observed today, October 10, 2024, around the world, and Dominica also joins in observing this day under the theme \u201cIt is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.\u201d Mental Health Day is observed annually worldwide.<\/p>\n

In a statement from Dr. Nadia Wallace, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Acute Psychiatric Unit of Dominica China Friendship Hospital, she emphasized that as we commemorate World Mental Health Day 2024, we shine a spotlight on this year’s crucial theme. According to Dr. Wallace, as mental health challenges continue to rise globally, especially in professional environments, this serves as a call to action for all of us, including organizations, employers, and employees alike, to foster healthier and more supportive workspaces.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a fast-paced world where productivity and success comes at a cost of personal well being mental health is frequently overlooked. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of employees experience stress anxiety and burn out due to work pressure leaving many of them unsupported by their organization.This trend is unsustainable not only for
\nfor the individual health but also for overall productivity and cooperate culture,\u201d Dr. Wallace explained.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

She noted that mental well-being must therefore be seen as a priority and not a luxury. \u201cAdditionally, the global workforce has witnessed significant changes over the past few years, with remote work, hybrid models, and increasing technological demands\u2014all of which add new layers of stress. As we continue to adapt to these changes, mental health in the workplace has never been more important. Creating a supportive environment is not just the right thing to do; it also enhances creativity, productivity, and employee retention,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Dr. Wallace believes that employers are in a unique position to create spaces where mental health is prioritized. This can be achieved through mental health policies that provide support for employees. These initiatives may include counseling services, flexible working hours, mental health days, training, awareness programs, and encouraging open conversations. Employees are also encouraged to take active steps toward maintaining their mental health; they can seek support and make time for self-care, which are essential strategies for balancing work and personal life.<\/p>\n

In addition, Dr. Wallace stated, \u201cAdditionally the global workforce has witnessed significant changes over the past few years with remote work hybrid models, and increasing technological demands all these add new layers of stress. Mental health refers to a person\u2019s condition regarding their psychological, social, and emotional well-being. Self-care plays a vital role in maintaining our mental health and can support treatment and recovery if one has a mental illness. Self-care involves taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical and mental health. This can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.<\/p>\n

Some self-care tips include: getting regular exercise, eating healthy meals, staying hydrated, making sleep a priority, trying relaxing activities, setting goals and priorities, practicing gratitude, focusing on positivity, and staying connected.
