{"id":330835,"date":"2024-10-14T19:03:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T23:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=330835"},"modified":"2024-10-14T19:08:43","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T23:08:43","slug":"signing-of-contracts-for-major-restore-and-repair-road-works-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/signing-of-contracts-for-major-restore-and-repair-road-works-completed\/","title":{"rendered":"Contracts now signed for major restore and repair road works"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_330836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-330836\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-330836\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/20241014_175102-COLLAGE-642x482.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-330836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(L-r) Fidel Grant, Roosevelt Skerrit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of Dominica has signed a contract for works to begin repairing edge failures on the Nicholas Liverpool and EO Leblanc highways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The signing ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Finance on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday marks a significant day in our continued efforts to build back stronger,\u201d Minister for Public Works Fidel Grant said. \u201cWe are here for this contract signing ceremony where we will undertake road repair and road rehabilitation at six locations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to him, a total of seven interventions cost $5,809,362.13.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDominicans, the opposition elements do not like us to mention the words Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Erika,\u201d he argued. \u201cThey want us to remain quiet about the destruction of our public infrastructure which had gone on over the last five to ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, Grant indicated that these severe weather conditions have never been experienced before,\u201d but seven years later we continue to undertake restoration and repair work to our road network which has become vulnerable to these adverse climate conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He urged the contractors on the EO Leblanc Highway as well as the Nicholas Liverpool Highway to prioritize the safety of their workers&#8217; and also road users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlease ensure that your equipment is packed properly when not in use and signage is placed for road users both in the day and in the night,\u201d Grant urged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Prime Minister Roosevelt said his government started saving money every month during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe established a vulnerability risk reduction fund and as difficult as things are globally including Dominica, we have since 2022 saved half a million dollars every month into that fund and that is where we are taking this money now to do this,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said there will be many other interventions as the weeks go, including water crossings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are going to systematically remove the drums you are seeing along the roads in Dominica, we are going to systematically eliminate them,\u201d he revealed. \u201cWe are waiting for proposals from the red gully, because there is some excavation that has to be done and also this major retaining wall in Belles\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skerrit added, \u201cWe are waiting for some proposals from the Ministry of Public Works before we give consideration to a final approach to this.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Government of Dominica has signed a contract for works to begin repairing edge failures on the Nicholas Liverpool and EO Leblanc highways.
