The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) held its inaugural Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony on Monday, October 14, 2024, at its headquarters in Jimmit, Dominica. This ceremony recognized the International Day for Disaster Reduction under the theme, \u201cEmpowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future.\u201d This theme resonates deeply with the mission of ODM and highlights the critical role each volunteer plays in shaping a safer and more resilient Dominica.<\/p>\n

Awardees were reminded that their unwavering dedication and efforts in disaster management have not only strengthened our country through various means and activities but have also inspired future generations to engage and participate. Volunteers in disaster management are the backbone of ODM’s efforts. Mr. Fabien addressed the gathering in his opening remarks, stating, \u201cEmpowering the next generation is not about providing knowledge. It is about unity, passion, and fostering a spirit of resilience. Each year, you have been a beacon of hope. As we celebrate your contributions, let us look to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Honorable Rayburn Blackmore began his address by congratulating the volunteers for their resolute efforts in disaster management. He continued by stating that this event is not merely a ceremony but something much more significant. It is part of a national government effort to build a collective consciousness around the idea of making Dominica the first climate-resilient country in the world. Volunteers are expected to be prepared at all times, particularly during the hurricane season. Climate change is a reality we cannot ignore, as hurricanes are now more intense and frequent. The Minister challenged all those involved in disaster management not to be complacent, emphasizing that Dominicans need to be prepared.<\/p>\n

The memories of Tropical Storm Erica and Hurricane Maria were brought to the forefront. Tropical Storm Erica caused an entire community to be relocated, costing the government millions of dollars. Hurricane Maria, a very dangerous storm, destroyed many homes, prompting the government to embark on a \u201chousing revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minister concluded his address by telling the awardees, \u201cA hero is revealed in you,\u201d adding that others see in them an example of resilience, and they must never underestimate the value and strength they possess. Various volunteers throughout Dominica, including groups and businesses such as FLOW Dominica and Jolly\u2019s Pharmacy, were awarded for their support and hard work. A heartfelt thank you to ODM was expressed by all present.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
