The University of the West Indies (UWI) has achieved recognition in the annual World University Rankings (WUR) published by Times Higher Education, for the sixth year in a row. In the recently released 2025 edition, UWI ranks among 2,092 leading higher education institutions globally, a noteworthy accomplishment given that this figure represents a fraction of an estimated 32,000 universities worldwide. Since its entry into the rankings, the university has continuously maintained a position within the top 5% of universities on a global scale.<\/p>\n
This year marks UWI’s sixth participation in the World University Rankings, a process that began in 2018. This move was part of a strategic initiative following years of fostering excellence in higher education within the Caribbean region. The intention was to improve the university’s visibility and augment funding through international student enrollment and research grants.<\/p>\n
Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of UWI, commented on the university’s ongoing ranking success, emphasizing, “The UWI’s consistent presence in these rankings reflects our long-standing commitment to academic excellence and leadership. As the higher education landscape rapidly changes, driven by increased competition and reduced funding, universities must innovate to succeed. The UWI recognises these challenges and is taking proactive steps to enhance its standing regionally and globally. While we see rankings as a measure of our quality improvements, we also understand that positions can fluctuate yearly. In this dynamic environment, we remain committed to reviewing and adjusting our quality standards and processes to meet evolving ranking criteria.”<\/p>\n
Professor Justin Robinson, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic-Industry Partnerships at UWI, highlighted the progress made in the “Teaching” performance indicator and the university’s favorable score in the “International Outlook” category. He explained that the international outlook measures a university’s ability to attract students and faculty from around the globe. This success aligns with UWI’s strategic goal of enhancing “Access.” However, he noted the challenges posed by a recent modification to Times Higher Education’s ranking methodology, which replaced the previously dominant “Citation” indicator with a more comprehensive “Research Quality” measure. Given that a significant portion of UWI’s research focuses on Caribbean issues, the university is dedicated to developing strategies to adapt to the new criteria while continuing to produce regionally relevant research.<\/p>\n
The World University Rankings serve as Times Higher Education’s premier ranking system, assessing five main aspects of leading research-oriented universities: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. When UWI first participated in the rankings in 2018, the total number of assessed institutions was just over 1,200. This year, nearly 2,100 universities from 115 countries and territories were included in the rankings, reflecting a more competitive landscape following significant revisions to the ranking criteria two years ago.<\/p>\n
To qualify for inclusion in the rankings, institutions must meet three essential requirements: they must publish a minimum number of academic papers over a five-year period (currently set at 1,000 papers), provide undergraduate education, and offer a diverse range of subjects.
