The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is set to accept its first group of Caribbean nationals into the joint Master\u2019s program in Global African Studies in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Candidates from the contributing countries of The UWI can apply for full tuition scholarships for enrollment in January 2025. This program, a key offering from the Institute of Global African Affairs, is aimed at individuals dedicated to the sustainable development of Africa and the Caribbean, including students in sociology, cultural and heritage studies, mid-career professionals in NGOs and the public sector, as well as social activists focused on Pan-African issues.<\/p>\n
This innovative, fully online one-year degree program consists of modules covering Pan-African Thought, Critical Development Theories, and Social Policy. It provides students the opportunity to learn from esteemed faculty at both UWI and UJ. Among the key themes addressed are climate change, gender equity, and poverty alleviation, all framed within the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Graduates will be well-prepared to influence development policies and practices, promoting comprehensive progress across the Global African diaspora.<\/p>\n
Dr. Halimah DeShong, Co-Director of the UJ\/UWI Joint Institute for Global African Studies, commented on the initiative, stating,\u201cThe UWI is proud to offer funding for Caribbean scholars to grow their capacity to impact the advancement of the global role of Africa and the diaspora in the 21st Century. This programme and our partnership with the University of Johannesburg reflects our commitment to development-focused education and to shaping a generation equipped to address the challenges and leverage the opportunities within the African and Caribbean contexts.\u201d<\/p>\n
The MA in Global African Studies is currently in its second year, with previous graduates studying solely at the University of Johannesburg. To be eligible for admission, applicants should possess a bachelor\u2019s degree in a relevant discipline. Additionally, work experience and a demonstrated interest in Global Africa will be key admission criteria. Successful candidates will become part of an active network of scholars from both regions.<\/p>\n
