The Integrity Commission of Dominica joins the rest of the world to observe International Anti-Corruption Day 2024, today.<\/p>\n
International Anti-Corruption Day is a United Nations (UN) observance that aims to raise awareness of corruption and its prevention. It is celebrated every year on December 9, which is the date of the adoption of the UN Convention Against Corruption in 2003. The Convention is a global treaty that provides a framework for countries to cooperate in fighting and preventing corruption.<\/p>\n
International Anti-Corruption Day 2024 is the 21st anniversary of the observance.<\/p>\n
International Anti-Corruption Day 2024 is being observed under the theme: Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow\u2019s Integrity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe campaign for the International Anti-Corruption Day 2024-2025 focuses on the role the youth as young guardians of integrity can play as advocates to raise awareness about corruption and its impacts on their communities,\u201d Chairman of the Integrity Commission Steve Hyacinth said. \u201cThis campaign will be launched on International Anti-Corruption Day 2024 \u00a0and run until International Anti-Corruption Day 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Mr. Hyacinth, the campaign will seamlessly lead into the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties (CoSP11) \u00a0to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in Doha, Qatar from December 14-19, 2025.<\/p>\n
Hyacinth pointed out that at the conference, young people will have the opportunity to present their appeals to world leaders urging them to support the future where they can thrive free from corruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe campaign aims to amplify voices of integrity leaders of tomorrow, allowing them to express their concerns and aspirations with the hope that their appeals will be heard and acted upon,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe campaign seeks to encourage youth to advocate for accountability and to actively participate in anti-corruption efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hyacinth said the campaign also seeks to effectively promote a culture of integrity across the public and private sectors and build a generation that stands up to corruption.<\/p>\n
He said the youth can be affected by corruption, but pointed out that they also have the potential to become powerful agents of change “in the fight for a future rooted in integrity.”<\/p>\n
Noting that education is the key to the fight for integrity and accountability, Hyacinth said he also believes it is important that the youth are taught the values of transparency, accountability, and integrity from an early age.<\/p>\n
