Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said his government is doing all in its power to eliminate the presence of illegal weapons and firearms in Dominica. Skerrit who was addressing a press conference recently said one crime committed through the use of a gun is one too many.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you know the genesis of all of these guns in the Caribbean is from the United States and we have been actively engaging the United States government into seeing how we can limit, if not eliminate the flow of small arms into the Caribbean region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cYou will see across the Caribbean there are a number of crimes and homicides and murders committed through the use of a gun, so it\u2019s an issue we continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister pointed out that crime is a societal challenge and therefore it requires society to be engaged in solving these issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will do all that we can do to provide the police with the resources that they need and we continue to do so. And in all fairness to the police, they have been doing a very good job in maintaining the low rate of crime and are also able to solve those murders and bring people before the court,\u201d he stated. \u201cEven if we are not at the rate of our neighbour, we are not taking that for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Skerrit added, \u201cWe want to do all we have to do to eliminate the presence of illegal weapons and firearms in Dominica.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, he mentioned that his government has heavily invested in scanners at the ports of entry and have been successful in detecting entry of guns<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are pushing on that and we are working with the US Government.
