The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) has publicly challenged Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit\u2019s assertions that the country\u2019s healthcare system is at its best ever. In a statement responding to Skerrit’s recent comments, the DFP directly refuted those claims, highlighting evidence of significant strides made during the 1980s under the leadership of the party’s founder and then-leader, Prime Minister Dame Mary Eugenia Charles.<\/p>\n
The statement claims that Dominica\u2019s healthcare during this period was not only recognized as exemplary in the Caribbean but de-centralized, and essentially free and universally accessible, a stark contrast to what it says are the present circumstances under the Skerrit-led Labour administration.<\/p>\n
Several key areas from the 1980s are listed as showcasing the effectiveness of the Freedom Party’s healthcare policies, including a near 100% immunization rate, and the eradication of Malaria on the island. In their view, these indicators serve as lasting evidence of a healthcare system that prioritized the health and well-being of Dominicans.<\/p>\n
Most notably, the DFP points to the stark contrast of reportedly increasing rates of infant mortality in recent years as “troubling”; a sign of measurable decline in the healthcare system, and a regression from earlier achievements.<\/p>\n
Party spokesman minced no words in summarizing: “Roosevelt Skerrit\u2019s claims about today\u2019s health care being \u201cthe best we ever had\u201d must be viewed with derision against this historic record.”<\/p>\n
