The High Seas Alliance, in partnership with the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat and EarthEcho International, is set to host the Caribbean Regional Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Conference. This virtual event will occur on January 30, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST).<\/p>\n

It aims to gather a multifaceted group of participants, including representatives from civil society, youth leaders, academics, indigenous populations, and policymakers to discuss the importance of the High Seas (BBNJ) Treaty for the Caribbean’s marine environments and oceanic economy.<\/p>\n

Participants in the conference will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the BBNJ Treaty and its specific ramifications for the Caribbean region. The agenda includes insights from experts on methods for promoting the treaty’s ratification and execution. Moreover, the event will feature interactive workshops tailored for civil society organizations, the youth, and indigenous communities, facilitating meaningful engagement among various stakeholders passionate about marine governance.<\/p>\n

The conference will highlight several critical components, including a keynote address by Dr. Dayne Buddo, Regional Project Coordinator- Blue Economy Caribbean, Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, who will discuss the economic and environmental repercussions of the high seas in the Caribbean. In addition to the keynote, a panel discussion will cover essential themes of the BBNJ Treaty, such as marine genetic resources, marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and capacity building.<\/p>\n

The High Seas Treaty represents an essential international framework governing activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction, addressing a range of issues vital for the sustainable management and preservation of the world\u2019s oceans. The High Seas Alliance, comprising over 60 NGOs, is dedicated to the promotion of this treaty, working collectively towards safeguarding ocean health for current and future generations.<\/p>\n
