The Electoral Reform Coalition (ERC) has brought its long-standing campaign for electoral reform to the attention of Barbados PM and current Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mia Mottley, in the form of an official letter. The letter is dated February 18, one day ahead of the commencement of the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, being held in Barbados from February 19-21.<\/p>\n

The ERC, a coalition of civil society organizations dedicated to achieving comprehensive electoral reform, has formally urged Prime Minister Mottley to present this letter, highlighting their cause, among the other heads of state and governments within the CARICOM framework.<\/p>\n

The ERC\u2019s campaign, which has spanned over fifteen years, has maintained that there is a pressing need for significant changes to Dominica\u2019s electoral framework. The coalition describes an ongoing struggle characterized by governmental indifference towards their calls for reform. This lack of engagement has been juxtaposed with a reportedly troubling response from the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, which the ERC claims has employed violent tactics against peaceful advocates demanding updates to an electoral system perceived as antiquated and inadequate.<\/p>\n

The letter addressed to Mottley outlines the urgent need for CARICOM’s intervention and support in the efforts to modernize electoral processes in Dominica.<\/p>\n

As the Chair of CARICOM, Prime Minister Mottley holds a pivotal role in fostering cooperation among member states and addressing issues that transcend national borders.<\/p>\n

The ERC correspondence extends their assurances of “highest consideration” to Prime Minister Mottley.<\/p>\n
