In a significant move, the Canefield Urban Council has announced that it will initiate legal action against all property owners whose Land and House rates remain unpaid. This decision, as shared by a press release from the organization, comes as a result of increasing delinquency in property tax payments, which the Council says it can no longer overlook.<\/p>\n
The Council asserts that despite repeated reminders\u2014including notices, invoices, and public announcements\u2014many property owners within the Municipality of Canefield have failed to fulfill their tax obligations. Facing mounting pressures from urgent community needs, it now feels compelled to act decisively in recovering outstanding payments.<\/p>\n
The non-payment of these essential taxes has critically impaired the Council\u2019s ability to provide vital services to residents; lack of funds stemming from unpaid property taxes has hindered efforts to address pressing local issues effectively, the statement said.<\/p>\n
To combat this situation, the Canefield Urban Council has decided to enforce the provisions outlined in the Collection of Taxes Ordinance Act, Chapter 66:01 of the Revised Laws of Dominica. This legal framework empowers the Council to take serious measures against defaulters, including the potential sale of properties that are in arrears. Furthermore, as stipulated in Section 35 of the same ordinance, the Council reserves the right to prevent individuals in default from leaving the state.<\/p>\n
The Council’s statement strongly urges all property owners to take immediate action. Those with outstanding payments are encouraged to visit the Council\u2019s office located at 7th Street, Canefield, to arrange for the settlement of their Land and House rates before the impending deadline of April 30, 2025.<\/p>\n
Failure to comply will result in the names of defaulters being forwarded to the Council\u2019s legal representatives who will pursue further action in accordance with the Collection of Taxes Ordinance. The Council has assured residents that its office will remain open during lunch hours to facilitate payments and address any questions or concerns.<\/p>\n
