Cassanni Laville, Photo credit Dominica.gov.dm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Minister Cassanni Laville has told the public that taking care of their teeth and gums is not only &#8220;essential in preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath,\u201d but may have far-reaching implications for mental well-being.<\/p>\n<p>His comment came as Dominica joined the rest of the world to observe World Oral Health Day on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a society, we continue to overlook the link between good oral health and good mental health,\u201d he said during a statement. \u201cWe all know that taking care of our teeth and gums is essential in preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He continued, \u201cBut have we ever stopped to think about how our oral health affects our minds, emotion, and overall mental well-being?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laville pointed out that while some may find it difficult to connect the dots between good oral health and strong mental capacity, it is not that far-fetched.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis year\u2019s theme reminds us that oral health is not just about having a beautiful smile, it is deeply connected to our self-confidence and the confidence others have in us, which in turn affects our mental well-being,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, Laville noted that oral health can cause pain, discomfort, and embarrassment which can negatively impact people&#8217;s mental state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, he pointed out that studies have shown that people with poor oral health are more likely to experience stress, low self-esteem, and mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChronic dental pain can make it difficult to focus on daily tasks affecting work, school, and even personal relationships,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral diseases, including dental caries, gum disease, and tooth loss, affected 42% of the WHO African Region\u2019s population in 2021. The region also has the highest number of noma cases, a rapidly progressing, non-contagious gangrenous disease of the mouth that primarily affects young children. If left untreated, noma has a high fatality rate, and survivors often suffer from life-long impairments, disfigurement, stigma, and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>This year the theme for oral health is: &#8220;A Happy Mouth is A Happy Mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Health Minister Cassanni Laville has told the public that taking care of their teeth and gums is not only &#8220;essential in preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath,\u201d but may have far-reaching implications for mental well-being.
