As the world marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the Dominican community within the British Armed Forces has taken a meaningful step, along with those from other Commonwealth territories, to honor their historical contributions by establishing the Commonwealth House in Birmingham.<\/p>\n

A recent press release from founders of Commonwealth House shared that during the Second World War, an estimated 16,000 individuals from the Caribbean, particularly West Indians, volunteered to serve alongside British forces. Many of these volunteers also joined military units in North America. Approximately 6,000 West Indians served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Canadian Air Force, performing diverse roles such as fighter pilots, bomb aimers, air gunners, and ground crew. Their service was recognized with a total of 103 decorations awarded to Caribbean airmen.<\/p>\n

Today, Dominicans continue their military service in the UK, with about 1,350 Commonwealth citizens reportedly recruited each year. Among them is Sergeant Phillip Peltier from Dominica, who has dedicated 22 years to the British Armed Forces. Serving as a physical training instructor in the Army, Phillip is now involved in transforming a historic 142-year-old building into the inaugural Commonwealth House\u2014a central hub for military personnel from all 56 Commonwealth nations, providing support and opportunities for personal and professional development.<\/p>\n

On May 3 and 4, Phillip was accompanied by 40 members of the British Armed Forces, to celebrate the project’s launch. Phillip expressed, \u201cCommonwealth House symbolises unity, cooperation, and collaboration among all Commonwealth nations. It embodies the values of democracy, equality, and cultural diversity we bring to the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samuel T. Reddy, CEO and Founder of Leavers to Leaders (LTL), who coordinated the initiative, added, \u201cIt is a great honour to have Phillip with us. We first connected in 2001 during our youth, and today, it is vital to unite and make a positive impact within our community. This project will enable current and future Commonwealth personnel to acquire valuable qualifications and contribute meaningfully to both their countries of origin and their adopted homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the press release, the Commonwealth House stands as a lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of all Caribbeans and all Commonwealth citizens, fostering unity and opportunity for generations to come. Located in Walsall and will be opened in 2027 for the Invictus Games in Birmingham.<\/p>\n

In the next two years, organizers report that 300 service personnel will reportedly be able to gain their national qualifications in construction, while 30 will be able to use the project for their MSC \/ MBA in sustainability leadership development with LTL academy.<\/p>\n

“The aim is that this will serve as a model for all those who wear military uniforms across the Commonwealth and are looking to make a meaningful impact on society in a sustainable way,” concluded the release.<\/p>\n
