{"id":342601,"date":"2025-06-03T17:56:07","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T21:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=342601"},"modified":"2025-06-03T17:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T21:59:10","slug":"hector-spags-john-is-uwps-new-deputy-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/hector-spags-john-is-uwps-new-deputy-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Hector &#8216;Spags&#8217; John is UWP&#8217;s new deputy leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_342602\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-342602\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-342602 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Hector-Spags-John-642x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"639\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-342602\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hector John<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency, Hector &#8216;Spags&#8217; John is the new Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement was made during the party\u2019s press conference held at the Garraway Hotel on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John replaces Senator Delbert Paris who recently resigned as Deputy Leader of the UWP.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris was elected deputy leader of the UWP at the party\u2019s delegates conference in December, 2024, after he lost his bid for the leadership of the party as Dr. Thomson Fontaine\u2019s only challenger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, questions began to surface about Paris\u2019 future in the leadership of the UWP after he voted in favour of some of the electoral reform legislation passed in parliament on March 19, 2025, while his party, as a part of the Electoral Reform Coalition (ERC), and a determined gathering of dissatisfied Dominicans, were protesting against the passage of that legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his resignation statement in April 2025, Paris emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration of recent events and the current leadership environment within the party. Despite his unwavering commitment to the party\u2019s founding principles and national vision, he expressed difficulty in effectively fulfilling his duties due to several unfortunate developments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John, who was addressing the press conference earlier today, said he is committed to bringing experience, stability, loyalty, and teamwork in his capacity as the new Deputy Leader of the UWP.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs I said, \u00a0I am a team player and I work under the leadership of Dr. Thompson-Fontaine and my other team members to ensure that the United Workers&#8217; Party brings prosperity to the people of Dominica,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to John, performance matters\u00a0and the UWP\u00a0showed that in the four and a half years\u00a0during their time in power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor 25 years, we have been hearing the blame game about the United Workers&#8217; Party that has been out for 25 years,\u201d he lamented. \u201c\u00a0So that means the United Workers&#8217; Party indeed performed\u00a0for the four and a half years it was in office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John believes that as a party, \u201cwe should begin to change the narrative to ensure that Dominicans get what they want in terms of prosperity, employment for the children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c I think a lot of us are in politics for what we can get, but not what we can do for the country\u2026,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, John noted that the Salisbury constituency has gained a very hard-working, bold, and independent community in the leadership of the UWP.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll is not lost,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, he called on the people of Dominica and members of the UWP to work together as a team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have to work together as a people, we have to work together as a team,\u201d John emphasized. \u201cNo matter if you are a Labourite , disgruntled or not\u2026the\u00a0\u00a0United Workers&#8217; Party is calling on each and every one of us home, to ensure that we save Dominica for our children and our children&#8217;s children.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Former Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency, Hector &#8216;Spags&#8217; John is the new Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP).
