Macmillan Education Caribbean has announced the launch of the Language Tree New Branches: Poetry Competition. the company’s press release describes it as a regional initiative aimed at fostering creativity, promoting literacy, and highlighting the diverse voices of young learners and educators throughout the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

The competition is open to students in primary school (Grades 3\u20136), lower secondary students, and teachers. Participants are invited to submit original poems inspired by one of six themes: The Weather, Nature, The Sea, Food, An Animal, or A Festival. Poems should be between 8 and 20 lines long, composed in Standard English, and showcase the individual voice and creativity of each entrant.<\/p>\n

Katy Cordery, Marketing Manager at Macmillan Education Caribbean, stated,\u201cOur goal is to create opportunities for expression that are accessible, enjoyable, and rooted in the lived experiences of our students and teachers. This competition offers a chance to celebrate the Caribbean\u2019s diverse cultures and landscapes while fostering a love for language and literacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Participants may also include hand-drawn illustrations to accompany their poems. While these visuals will not influence the judging process, they offer an additional creative outlet for those wishing to express themselves visually, says Macmillan.<\/p>\n

All entries must be submitted by Friday, September 12, 2025. Early submissions are encouraged. Submissions should be made by a parent, guardian, or teacher on behalf of the student, along with a signed permission form. Poems will be judged within their respective categories\u2014Primary Students, Secondary Students, and Teachers\u2014based on originality, clarity, relevance to the theme, and poetic language.<\/p>\n

Selected winners will have their poems published in a professionally produced, special edition poetry book by Macmillan Education. This provides a valuable opportunity for participants to be published authors and share their voices across the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
