The shipments departed Dominica on June 11 and June 19 respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of forty-one thousand (41,000) pounds of Dominican plantains, sourced from over thirty (30) local farmers were exported. These pilot shipments are part of a broader effort to expand Dominica\u2019s trade footprints in both regional and international markets, with a strong emphasis on product quality, supply chain efficiency, and farmer empowerment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This milestone reflects DEXIA\u2019s commitment to strengthening the island\u2019s agricultural value chain and farmer support, through structured market access and guaranteed procurement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343537\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-343537\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-to-be-exported-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-to-be-exported-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-to-be-exported-387x480.jpg 387w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-to-be-exported.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plantains to be exported<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an interview with Dominica News Online (DNO) on Friday, Director of Projects and Marketing at DEXIA, Cleave St Jean said that in addition to the first shipment of plantains that was exported last week Thursday, (being the trial batch for the U.S.) and the shipment that went out yesterday, another is being planned for next week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe niche market is a market with a lot of large demands, traditionally they source plantains from Latin America and the Dominican Republic, so we are actually working with someone to see if we can penetrate and we can draw attention to the West Indian people in the U.S. to purchase West Indian origin plantains (Dominican plantains),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to St Jean, there is the capacity to tap into the U.S. consumer market for plantains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, he explained that shipping days would depend on the schedule of the transport agency, which is Tropical Shipping.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are going to send the third one next week, so we will be getting a review from the buyer as to how we are performing in the market,\u201d St Jean explained. \u201cYou cannot just tell by just doing one shipment..\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He continued, \u201cAfter we have done probably three or four then we will get better feedback\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, St Jean noted that DEXIA also exports mixed containers to St Thomas every two to three weeks. These, he said, include coconut, plantains, tanias, cucumbers, eggplants, and seasoning peppers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-343538\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-packaged-to-be-exported--e1750525388886-300x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-packaged-to-be-exported--e1750525388886-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-packaged-to-be-exported--e1750525388886-530x480.jpg 530w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Plantains-packaged-to-be-exported--e1750525388886.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plantains packaged to be exported<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He revealed that DEXIA also exports mixed containers to Tortola (British Virgin Islands) every two weeks with a dominance of the listed produce, as well as yams and dasheen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A previous release mentioned that the U.S. market offers significant opportunities for Dominica\u2019s fresh produce, given its growing demand for more natural and healthier produce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe successful execution of this shipment demonstrates our continued progress in positioning Dominica as a reliable source of fresh, sustainable produce,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade, and Energy\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Vince Henderson\u00a0said. \u00a0\u201cWe thank our farmers for their dedication and partnership; their hard work is at the core of this achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key feature of the market expansion initiative is DEXIA\u2019s Procurement of Agricultural Produce Facility, which the Government established in 2023, that enables prompt, 48-hour payment to farmers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This facility represents a critical component in improving farmer confidence and livelihoods.
