{"id":343661,"date":"2025-06-24T12:22:23","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T16:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=343661"},"modified":"2025-06-24T12:22:23","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T16:22:23","slug":"chief-education-officer-dr-jeffrey-blaize-says-the-g6na-has-outlived-its-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/chief-education-officer-dr-jeffrey-blaize-says-the-g6na-has-outlived-its-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Education Officer Dr. Jeffrey Blaize says the G6NA has outlived its purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_343662\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343662\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-343662\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Chief-Education-Officer-Dr.-Jeffrey-Blaize-DNO-file-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"505\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chief Education Officer Dr. Jeffrey Blaize<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief Education Officer Dr. Jeffrey Blaize is of the view that despite the gains that were made in the Grade 6 National Assessment (G6NA) Examination in the past, the format has become obsolete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was delivering remarks during the release of the G6NA results held at the Alliance Francaise recently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNotwithstanding the gains that were made in national assessment over the past years, particularly with respect to grade six national assessment, we will agree that the examination that is, the Grade 6 National Examination in its current structure has far outlived its purpose&#8211;that is, the purpose for which it was intended, \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Blaize continued, \u201cThe degree of anxiety which is placed on students at a tender age, and even on their parents and the teachers, should not be an outcome of any education system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, in keeping with the objectives of education reform, he noted that moving forward, there will be a different structure, as well as a different purpose for some of the examinations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to\u00a0assure the general public that we will continue listening to our stakeholders,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a week ago the Ministry of Education held a series of engagements with stakeholders, primarily principals at various primary schools, senior teachers, as well as PTA representatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd from the meetings, we got really, really good feedback and we&#8217;re looking forward to engaging the remainder of our stakeholders,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Blaize went on to state that opportunities must be provided for students to speak and read both at home and at school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have also concluded that school effectiveness relies heavily on effective school management and leadership. I will use this medium once again to reiterate the indicators of overall student success and among these are the student&#8217;s ability to converse and to read at an early age,\u201d he emphasized. \u201cThis means that opportunities must be provided for students to speak and to read both at home and at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The education officer also pointed out that\u00a0\u00a0reading remains the key to overall literacy development and therefore, \u201cthere is no substitute to reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He believes that teachers&#8217; effectiveness and continuing professional development assist in effective classroom delivery and improve learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, he asserted that management effectiveness is critical for school success and therefore the role of the school principal remains critical to effective management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd as we often advise in the Ministry of Education, parental involvement in the life of a student that includes the student&#8217;s educational life is non-negotiable,\u201d he noted. \u201cThis means that it is, as we often say, compulsory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Blaize commended the principals and teachers from the various schools on the island for their excellent work over the past years, as well as the staff of the Ministry of Education, the supervision support, and other staff for, \u201censuring that we coordinate education activities, teaching and learning, and provide the requisite supervision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also commended the\u00a0parents and guardians\u00a0for working closely with the ministry to ensure that\u00a0the\u00a0students succeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe also appreciate the work of our partners in education, the corporate entities, helping the schools tirelessly to achieve their objectives, as well as other stakeholders in education.
