Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) Rhoda St John has announced that as of 6:00 AM today the fire that started at the Fond Cole Landfill yesterday has been “partially contained”.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not likely to spread, however, there will be some burning still taking place,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n

St John thanked CR5 and the Office of Disaster Management for assisting the DSWMC with water trucks as well as the fire service, and ADA Trucking who left the landfill at 5:00 AM this morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe efforts to completely distinguish the fire will continue at 8:00 AM today,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

The DSWMC admonishes the general public, especially the neighbouring communities, to continue to exercise caution.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the corporation expresses its apologies and concerns for the persons affected by the fumes from the fire which occurred at the sanitary landfill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis hazard was a suspicious occurrence which we have been working to extinguish since the early hours of the afternoon,\u201d St John revealed.<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cFollowing the recommendation of the fire service we wish to advise any resident of the surrounding communities being affected, especially those with respiratory illnesses to vacate the area if possible\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
