However, in clearing the air, \u00a0Acting Chief of Police Lincoln Corbette told reporters during a press conference this week that these accusations are untrue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police\u00a0do not conduct any illegal searches, none\u00a0whatsoever,\u201d he said. \u201c\u00a0When we conduct searches at your house, we have a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corbette continued, \u201cWhen they stop you in your streets, because we have information that suggests that you may have a weapon or drugs or some other illegal thing happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Corbette, no selective searches are done by the police.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, he said, \u201cWe searched \u00a0and arrested our own, so we are not doing any selective searches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that based on the information and intelligence that the police have, searches are conducted with warrants, \u201cor information.&#8221; He continued: &#8221; In case of a motor vehicle, we can stop you and search you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as I said, we do not conduct any illegal or unlawful searches on anybody,\u201d he reiterated. \u201c A search has been conducted on your house, you want to see the copy of the warrant. We have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe show it to\u00a0you at your house. We cannot give it to\u00a0you\u00a0to read\u2026but we have it,\u201d Corbette explained.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_344922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-344922\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-344922\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week-642x349.jpg 642w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week-768x417.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week-640x348.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Rayburn-Blackmoore-addressing-press-conference-this-week.jpg 898w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-344922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rayburn Blackmoore addressing press conference this week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore said under written law, the police have the authority, based on suspicion, reasonable cause, to arrest and to search.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police, under certain circumstances, can enter your home if the police [are] in immediate pursuit of a felon and that person runs under your bed, the police has a right to run under your bed and extract that person and arrest that person without a warrant,\u201d he explained. \u201c If the police [are] walking and [hear] somebody screaming for help, the police have a right to go to your home and investigate and to arrest [you] without a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Blackmore stated that under the Firearms Act, the police have a right to stop and search people with reasonable suspicion or cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Drug Prevention Act, so too. Section 7 of the Constitution provides protection to your privacy. But of course, the same Constitution and Section 3, I believe, give the police the authority to arrest you on suspicion for three days before taking you before the court, and to release you,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Blackmoore admonished the public, \u201cWe cannot have our cake and eat it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want safer streets, we have to give something and allow the police with reasonable cause, and respect [to] human decency, to do their work,\u2019 he remarked. \u201cThat&#8217;s got to be fundamentally clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Minister for National Security entrusted by the Prime Minister, Blackmoore said he will do anything to protect the public\u2019s interest and to ensure that Dominica remains the safest place in the Caribbean&#8211;as it is now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we are going to need an encompassing effort, not only the police and the Prime Minister, \u00a0but all of us\u2026,\u2019 he encouraged. \u201cDominica belongs to all of us, so let us do what is right to protect this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cMy advice to you, if the police says that they have information that you&#8217;re carrying something illicit, cooperate with the police and avoid the embarrassment.
